In February 2025, Succinic Acid prices in the U.S. saw a decline, mainly due to the steady availability of previous stocks and consistent demand from the pharmaceutical and cosmetics sectors. However, U.S.-China trade tensions and rising production costs limited the price increases. The Arctic blast and ongoing supply chain disruptions negatively impacted the offtakes, putting further downward pressure on prices. The price reductions indicated the complex market dynamics, where tariffs, higher shipping costs, and domestic supply issues influenced the Succinic Acid pricing.
The availability of previous Succinic Acid stock was firm in the market due to a 4.7% increase in U.S. container imports, including those from China. However, rising trade tensions between the U.S. and China in February 2025 led to higher import costs from China. The U.S. imposed a 10% tariff, and China retaliated with a 15% tariff on U.S. agricultural products. The combination of rising shipping costs and proposed fees on Chinese-built vessels further affected the Succinic Acid prices. Moreover, the Arctic blast caused “freeze-offs,” led to setbacks in domestic supply. Concurrently, the demand for Succinic Acid from cosmetics and pharmaceuticals sectors kept imports rates steady in the country.
In the pharmaceutical sector, demand for Succinic Acid has increased as the industry focuses on innovation, supply chain challenges, and improving biopharmaceutical production. With more than 85% of biopharma companies investing in digital tools and advanced manufacturing, Succinic Acid has become an essential ingredient in creating and producing drugs. As pharmaceutical companies work on growth and adjust to new regulations, succinic acid’s versatility in drug development has played an important role in supporting these efforts.
At the same time, demand for Succinic Acid in the cosmetics sector remained steady amid rise in consumption of eco-friendly and sustainable products. In the U.S., the prestige beauty market is expanding in 2025, driving up the demand for Succinic Acid in skincare products because of its moisturizing and anti-aging benefits. As fragrance and cosmetics brands focus on innovation and sustainability, Succinic Acid has become an important ingredient in meeting consumer demand for natural and effective products.
Looking ahead to Q2 2025, the outlook for Succinic Acid is positive. Imports are expected to rise due to favorable trade conditions in the spring and summer months, as well as growing demand from cosmetics manufacturers focused on sustainable ingredients. While production costs may rise, particularly due to higher feedstock prices and increased petrochemical demand in downstream industries, Succinic Acid is still set for growth in the North American market.
