Origin Materials and Husky Technologies have teamed up to develop and commercialize a hybrid polymer called PET/F, which has the potential to revolutionize sustainable packaging. By combining furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) with PET, Origin Materials created a tunable hybrid polymer with enhanced performance properties and full recyclability. Husky Technologies, a leading injection molding supplier, played a crucial role in molding the PET/F polymer into preforms and bottles using its advanced manufacturing equipment.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the advancement of eco-friendly polymers for packaging solutions. The PET/F polymer offers exceptional mechanical strength and barrier properties, resulting in extended shelf life for products. By adjusting the manufacturing conditions and the amount of FDCA copolymer utilized, the properties of the hybrid polymer can be tailored to meet specific requirements.

Origin Materials envisions developing and selling a range of 100% bio-based, low-carbon, fully recyclable PET/F polymers. These innovative materials have the potential to replace traditional packaging materials such as glass and aluminum due to their sustainability benefits and superior performance characteristics. With the help of their patented technology platform, the company aims to achieve large-scale production of FDCA, polyethylene furanoate (PEF), and PET/F.

The partnership between Origin Materials and Husky Technologies underscores their shared commitment to material innovation and cutting-edge polymer processing technologies. By leveraging their respective expertise and capabilities, the two companies aspire to transform the plastics industry and drive the adoption of sustainable polymers on a global scale.

Although specific pricing details for PET/F were not disclosed, Origin Materials has emphasized that the hybrid polymer is expected to be cost-effective, fully recyclable, and significantly reduce the carbon footprint compared to traditional petroleum-based materials. Furthermore, PET/F boasts impressive strength, thermal properties, and barrier properties, making it an attractive option for a wide range of packaging applications.

This collaboration between Origin Materials and Husky Technologies represents a major step forward in the pursuit of more sustainable and environment-friendly packaging solutions. With their combined efforts, these companies are poised to make a lasting impact on the industry by offering a viable alternative to conventional materials and promoting a greener future.

About Origin Materials: Origin, the global leader in carbon negative materials, is dedicated to facilitating the worldwide shift towards sustainable materials. Leveraging groundbreaking technology and innovative processes, Origin has created a platform that converts biomass carbon into valuable materials while simultaneously capturing carbon emissions. This scientific breakthrough has evolved from its early stages of proof of concept to successful pilot demonstrations and beyond. Notably, in 2016, Nestlé Waters and Danone partnered with Origin to bring to market the platform's inaugural product: plant-based PET plastic with an impressively low carbon footprint. Recognizing the immense potential, PepsiCo joined the NaturALL Bottle Alliance in 2018, further reinforcing Origin's commitment to revolutionizing the materials industry.
