Stellantis has decided to extend the production stoppage at its Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy, until January 20, 2025, amid ongoing challenges in its order books. This was confirmed by the head of the FIOM-Cgil trade union, Gianni Mannori, on Thursday December 12 to media.

The extension, which was first reported by the daily MF, has not yet been officially announced by Stellantis, but Mannori told media channels that it reflects the continued uncertainty surrounding demand for key models produced at the site. Stellantis, in a statement has also confirmed the pause. It stated that the company was still assessing order volumes for January and would make a formal announcement regarding production activities next week.

The Mirafiori plant, one of Stellantis' most iconic facilities and the birthplace of Fiat, has faced several production halts in 2024 due to weak demand for the electric Fiat 500 city car and the Maserati sports models manufactured there. This is part of a broader industry trend, where demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in Europe and luxury cars in key markets like China and the U.S. has been less robust than anticipated.

At the end of November, Stellantis had already announced that assembly lines at Mirafiori would be paused for the entire month of December and until January 5 due to what it described as "continuing uncertainty in sales." The company had cited low consumer demand for electric vehicles in Europe, compounded by weak sales of high-end vehicles like Maserati in Asia and North America.

Stellantis' decision to extend the stoppage underscores the challenging conditions facing the global auto industry, with fluctuating demand for both electric and luxury vehicles. The company has not yet provided specific figures on the financial impact of the production halts at Mirafiori.

The Mirafiori stoppage is the latest in a series of operational disruptions across Stellantis' European plants, as the company grapples with shifting consumer preferences, supply chain issues, and changing market dynamics in the global automotive sector.

Stellantis' extended production stoppage at its Mirafiori plant in Italy could disrupt electric vehicle output, particularly the Fiat 500, and delay deliveries of luxury models like Maserati. This may affect supply chains, consumer confidence, and the company’s financial performance, especially amid Europe’s growing shift towards electric mobility.

Stellantis N.V. is one of the largest automotive manufacturers in the world, created through the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and PSA Group (Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, and others) in January 2021. Headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Stellantis operates in more than 130 countries and produces a diverse range of vehicles, from mass-market cars to premium and luxury models. The company’s extensive portfolio includes brands such as Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Fiat, making it a key player in both the mainstream and premium automotive segments.
