Solvay has inaugurated an advanced biodigester at its Ciudad Juarez production facility in Mexico, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainability and the global energy transition. The biodigester is designed to convert locally sourced organic waste into biomethane, a renewable energy source that will replace a portion of the natural gas used to power the site’s boiler and kiln operations. This initiative, developed in partnership with Franco y Asociados, is expected to reduce the facility’s carbon dioxide emissions by 12% compared to 2021 levels.
The transition from natural gas to biomethane has not been without its challenges. Key obstacles included securing a consistent supply of organic waste as feedstock, refining biogas into high-quality biomethane, and adapting existing systems to accommodate the new energy source. Achieving these goals required innovative solutions and a focus on maintaining cost-effectiveness. This success reflects Solvay’s determination and its commitment to adopting cleaner energy sources, even in regions with unique logistical and operational challenges.
“This project is particularly important for our site, as energy transitions must be adapted to the unique conditions and resources of our local ecosystem,” said Liliana Villegas, Site Manager at Ciudad Juarez. “By converting waste into biomethane, we’re making a meaningful contribution to Solvay’s global sustainability goals, which include reducing global emissions by 30% by 2030. Beyond that, we’re enhancing our community and creating a more attractive environment for talent to grow and thrive. It’s a win for both the planet and the people who live and work here.”
Rene Franco, CEO of Franco y Asociados, highlighted the broader impact of the project. “We are proud to have completed the biodigester installation and managed the construction of the biomethane transport pipeline. This project reflects our commitment to developing innovative waste management solutions that address environmental challenges while delivering long-term benefits to businesses and communities alike.”
The Ciudad Juarez facility plays a critical role in Solvay’s operations as one of the company’s three global production sites for anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (AHF), alongside facilities in Germany and China. AHF is essential in the production of high-octane fuels for the automotive and aerospace industries and is also used in stainless steel pickling, glass etching, and titanium refining.
To celebrate the biodigester launch, Solvay hosted an event attended by local environmental authorities, representatives from universities, members of the National Association of the Chemical Industry, and employees with their families. This occasion underscored the importance of collaboration and innovation in advancing Solvay’s vision of a more sustainable future while benefiting the surrounding community.
