Solvay and Hankook have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on developing circular silica derived from biosourced and waste materials for tire manufacturing. This partnership brings together Solvay’s extensive expertise in silica and its commitment to sustainability with Hankook’s advanced manufacturing capabilities and strong market presence, aiming to set new standards for sustainable tire production.
Solvay’s silica portfolio is recognized for its ability to deliver superior performance in tire manufacturing. It ensures low rolling resistance, which helps reduce fuel consumption in internal combustion engine vehicles and extends the battery range of electric vehicles. Additionally, the silica offers high wear resistance, contributing to longer tire lifespans. At the heart of this innovation is highly dispersible silica (HDS), a crucial component for meeting the circularity goals of tire manufacturers. Solvay’s efforts in circular production are already evident in its rice husk ash (RHA) production facility in Livorno, Italy, and the company continues to expand these initiatives globally in collaboration with leading tire industry players.
“This partnership marks a significant milestone in our journey towards more sustainable tire manufacturing,” stated Bonhee Ku, President and Chief Technology Officer of Hankook Tire. “By collaborating with Solvay, we aim to advance the development of sustainable materials that not only enhance tire performance but also contribute to the circular economy and a greener future.”
An Nuyttens, President of Solvay’s Silica & Special Chem business, underscored the importance of silica in the production of high-performance tires. “Silica is essential for tires that combine superior performance with sustainability. We are thrilled to work with Hankook to develop circular silica solutions that address key challenges in the tire industry while offering substantial environmental benefits. Together, we aim to push the boundaries of sustainable innovation,” Nuyttens said.
Under this collaboration, the two companies will focus on the technical development of circular silica with the goal of achieving mass production in the near future. Currently, Solvay’s products are in the pilot phase and undergoing evaluation. The partnership aligns with both companies’ shared commitment to sustainability and their vision for creating a more environmentally responsible future for the automotive sector.
This collaboration reflects Solvay and Hankook’s proactive approach to addressing the growing demand for sustainable solutions in the automotive industry. By leveraging their combined expertise and resources, the partnership is expected to deliver groundbreaking innovations that enhance tire performance while significantly reducing environmental impact. Together, the two companies aim to drive meaningful progress toward a greener and more sustainable future for mobility.
