SLB, a global leader in energy technology, has secured a contract from Petrobras for the delivery of two subsea raw seawater injection (RWI) systems to enhance recovery at the Búzios field, one of the largest deepwater oil fields in Brazil. The award comes after a competitive tender process and marks a significant step in advancing Petrobras' efforts to optimize production and reduce environmental impact.
The subsea RWI systems are designed to address current bottlenecks in water injection capacities of Petrobras’ floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels. By introducing raw seawater directly to the seabed for reservoir pressurization, these systems are a more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional topside injection methods. The integration of subsea RWI will not only boost oil recovery but also reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per barrel of oil produced, aligning with Petrobras' sustainability goals.
Mads Hjelmeland, CEO of SLB OneSubsea, emphasized the growing importance of secondary recovery methods in deepwater basins, especially as they mature. "Subsea raw seawater injection is a proven technology with a strong business case, and we believe it should become mainstream," said Hjelmeland. "By placing the injection system on the seabed, we free up space, reduce fuel consumption for FPSOs, and decrease the power needs for injection systems—it's a win-win for Petrobras, and we’re thrilled to be part of this project."
The contract involves the provision of two complete subsea RWI systems for Petrobras' FPSOs P-74 and P-75. Each system will include a subsea seawater injection pump, an umbilical system, and a topside variable speed drive. The project will also see SLB OneSubsea strengthen its local presence in Brazil, further enhancing its multidisciplinary team and technical support capabilities.
SLB OneSubsea will utilize its AI-enabled Subsea Live™ services to provide continuous condition monitoring and expert support throughout the project’s lifecycle. This technology enables real-time insights into system performance, ensuring the operational efficiency and longevity of the subsea systems.
As part of its ongoing commitment to the energy transition, SLB OneSubsea is leveraging its deep technical expertise to decarbonize subsea operations and unlock the full potential of subsea technology to accelerate sustainable energy production.
