A significant milestone has been reached in the fight against climate change with the mechanical completion of the world's first commercial-scale carbon capture plant at a cement facility. Located in Brevik, Norway, the plant is a collaborative effort between Heidelberg Materials, one of the world's largest building materials companies, and SLB Capturi, a global technology company focused on carbon capture solutions.

Once operational, the carbon capture plant is expected to significantly reduce Heidelberg Materials' CO2 emissions. The facility is designed to capture up to 400,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, which is equivalent to the annual emissions of roughly 87,000 passenger vehicles. This captured CO2 will then be transported and safely stored, paving the way for the production of net-zero cement without compromising on product quality.

"Reaching this milestone is a testament to the power of working together and the collective determination to make a positive climate impact,” said Egil Fagerland, CEO of SLB Capturi. The successful completion of the project is attributed to strong collaboration between SLB Capturi, Heidelberg Materials, and local industry partners like Aker Solutions.

The Brevik CCS plant is a critical step towards achieving net-zero emissions in the cement industry, a sector known for its inherent CO2 emissions. "The mechanical completion of the Brevik CCS project is a landmark achievement in the decarbonization journey of the cement industry,” said Giv Brantenberg, general manager Northern Europe for Heidelberg Materials.

Part of Europe's First CO2 Capture Chain

The Brevik CCS plant is a key component of The Longship CCS project, Europe's first complete value chain for capturing, transporting, and storing industrial CO2 emissions. With the mechanical completion achieved, the plant will now move into the commissioning phase, with operations expected to begin in 2025.

SLB Capturi is a leader in carbon capture technology, focusing on reducing emissions from industries that are difficult to decarbonize, such as cement, waste-to-energy, and gas-to-power. Leveraging advanced technology and years of experience in building and operating carbon capture units, SLB Capturi offers comprehensive solutions and services to help these industries lower their carbon footprint.

Heidelberg Materials, a global leader in the building materials industry, has been a major producer of cement, aggregates, and ready-mixed concrete. Its products are essential for constructing homes, infrastructure, and commercial buildings. Committed to environmental sustainability, Heidelberg Materials is at the forefront of the transition to a carbon-neutral and circular economy in the building materials sector. The company is actively developing innovative, sustainable building materials and solutions, as well as leveraging digital technologies to enhance customer experiences.
