SLB-ACC JV Wins FEED Contract for Carbon Capture at Paper Plant at U.S. Gulf

The joint venture between SLB and Aker Carbon Capture (SLB-ACC JV) has been awarded a contract by CO280 Solutions for the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) of a major carbon capture plant located at a pulp and paper mill on the U.S. Gulf Coast. This ambitious project is set to capture 800,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year, significantly contributing to emissions reduction. Additionally, the plant will ensure permanent, verifiable, and cost-effective carbon dioxide removals (CDRs). This development underscores the commitment of SLB and Aker Carbon Capture to advancing large-scale carbon capture technologies and addressing climate change through innovative solutions.

North America's pulp and paper industry offers a significant carbon removal potential, with the capability to capture up to 130 million tonnes of CO2 annually. By implementing carbon capture and storage technologies, this sector can achieve negative emissions, meaning it removes more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it emits during production.

The concept design for the FEED of the carbon capture plant utilizes the SLB-ACC JV’s modularized Just Catch™ 400 technology. This standardized and modular approach facilitates the pre-fabrication of carbon capture units, enhancing efficiency and scalability. The joint venture is currently deploying both Just Catch™ and Big Catch™ solutions across various industrial sectors, including bioenergy, cement, and waste-to-energy.

This contract follows recent announcements by the SLB-ACC JV and CO280 regarding their joint efforts to develop large-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects within the pulp and paper industries in the United States and Canada. Additionally, their collaboration with Microsoft aims to scale the entire carbon removal value chain across these regions. The initiative focuses on capturing and permanently sequestering biogenic CO2 at pulp and paper mills, further advancing the commitment to effective and large-scale carbon mitigation strategies.

Egil A. Fagerland, CEO of SLB-ACC JV, remarked that this contract signifies a crucial advancement in their collaboration with CO280 to provide large-scale carbon capture solutions for the North American industry. He expressed enthusiasm for the ongoing partnership with CO280 and their pulp and paper industry partner, highlighting the goal of preparing for a full-scale carbon capture plant through the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase. This milestone underscores the commitment to advancing carbon capture technology and contributing to industrial sustainability.

Jonathan Rhone, CEO of CO280, emphasized that partnerships are crucial for achieving significant carbon removal goals before 2030. He expressed pride in the collaborations established with the pulp and paper industry and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) markets, particularly with SLB-ACC JV as a key technology partner. Rhone highlighted the potential of capturing and permanently storing biogenic CO2 at mills to unlock substantial carbon removal opportunities within the pulp and paper sector and to scale up the CDR market effectively.
