SEE, formerly known as Sealed Air, has emerged as a trailblazer in sustainable packaging solutions by addressing the environmental concerns associated with expanded polystyrene (EPS). EPS, commonly utilized for packaging fresh poultry and red meat, has long been criticized for its non-recyclable nature, contributing to a significant volume of non-biodegradable waste.

In response to these challenges, SEE has introduced an industrially compostable overwrap tray, a groundbreaking alternative to EPS trays. Crafted from bio-based content, the Cryovac food-grade resin used in the tray is USDA-certified, boasting an impressive 54% bio-based content derived from renewable wood cellulose.

The primary objective behind the development of this compostable tray was to replicate the performance and stability of EPS foam trays. SEE ensured that the tray underwent rigorous testing throughout the entire food value chain. From enduring demanding manufacturing systems to withstanding extreme temperatures and navigating through challenging shipping and distribution environments, the tray proved its mettle by avoiding issues such as breaking, cracking, or leaking.

Crucially, the compostable tray is designed to be used without additional components like overwrap film, pads, labels, or stickers. This simplicity doesn't compromise its eco-friendliness, as the tray has been rigorously tested and certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) as industrial compostable. This means it can undergo biological treatment at large-scale industrial composting facilities where available.

Tobias Grasso, SEE's President of the Americas Region, expressed pride in bringing to market the first compostable packaging tray designed to seamlessly integrate into existing processor production lines. Grasso highlighted the CRYOVAC brand compostable overwrap tray as a groundbreaking innovation, surpassing traditional trays in environmental friendliness and aiding customers in achieving their sustainability goals.

The extensive trials conducted across the food value chain emphasize SEE's thorough testing and quality assurance processes. Surviving the challenges posed by manufacturing systems, extreme temperatures, and the complex logistics of shipping and distribution, the compostable tray has proven its reliability and resilience. SEE's emphasis on maintaining performance and stability equivalent to EPS foam trays ensures that the shift to compostable options doesn't compromise the functionality or durability expected in food packaging.

The absence of additional components in the compostable tray, such as overwrap film, pads, labels, or stickers, further simplifies the packaging process and reinforces its eco-friendly profile. SEE's decision to forego these supplementary materials showcases a holistic approach to sustainability, reducing the overall environmental impact associated with packaging.

The dual certification from TÜV Austria for soil and marine biodegradability sets SEE's compostable tray apart as a responsible choice. The assurance that the tray's resin can naturally degrade in soil and marine environments underscores SEE's commitment to minimizing the long-term impact of packaging materials on various ecosystems.

Tobias Grasso's statement on SEE's pride in introducing a compostable packaging tray that seamlessly integrates into existing production lines highlights the company's forward-thinking approach. By designing a solution that aligns with existing infrastructure, SEE facilitates a smoother transition for manufacturers looking to adopt more sustainable packaging options.
