Röhm has successfully commenced production at its new Bay City plant in Texas, USA, marking a major milestone in its history. The facility is the first to implement the company’s proprietary C2-based LiMA technology on an industrial scale, representing a significant advancement in the manufacturing of methyl methacrylate (MMA).
“The start of production in Bay City is a pivotal moment for Röhm. It serves as the launchpad for delivering next-generation MMA using our proprietary LiMA technology, which not only enhances environmental sustainability but also strengthens supply security in this expanding market,” said Dr. Hans Bohnen, CEO of Röhm. He expressed his gratitude to Röhm’s partners and suppliers for their dedication in bringing this innovative technology to market. The strong demand for the product has already led to multiple long-term customer commitments, further reinforcing the value of this new production method.
Once fully operational, the Bay City plant will produce 250,000 metric tons of MMA annually, benefiting from a cutting-edge process that utilizes ethylene, natural gas, and methanol. Compared to traditional MMA production methods, the LiMA technology offers higher product yields, reduced energy consumption, and a significantly lower environmental footprint—including minimized water usage and waste generation.
Ron Ayles, Managing Partner at Advent International, highlighted the significance of this investment, emphasizing its strategic timing and location. “Our investment in Röhm aligns with Advent’s commitment to fostering world-class, innovative businesses. The Bay City plant, equipped with the groundbreaking LiMA technology, delivers a sustainable and high-quality product to the U.S. MMA market, which is currently experiencing a supply shortage,” Ayles stated. “We have made this investment at the right time and in the right place. As the sole C2-based MMA producer in the U.S., we are well-positioned to meet growing demand, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Röhm as a global leader in methacrylate technology.”
With its strategic location in Bay City, the plant is optimally positioned to serve both domestic and international markets. The company has already received strong customer interest in MMA produced through its proprietary C2 process, surpassing initial demand expectations.
“In the coming weeks, we will systematically increase production rates to meet demand,” Bohnen added. “We are also actively evaluating further growth opportunities to expand our business and continue driving innovation in the industry.”
This milestone underscores Röhm’s dedication to sustainability, technological leadership, and market growth, reinforcing its position as a leading global supplier of high-quality MMA. The successful launch of the Bay City plant signals a new era of environmentally responsible and efficient MMA production, setting new standards in the industry.
