Rock Tech Lithium Inc. has forged a strategic technology partnership with GEA Group AG, a global leader in advanced process technology, to supply critical equipment for its Lithium Converter in Guben, Germany. Under the agreement, GEA will provide crystallization and zero-liquid discharge technology, ensuring the highest standards in the production of battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM).
Following an intensive two-and-a-half-year selection process, technical assessments, and contract negotiations, Rock Tech has successfully completed test works with GEA to secure essential crystallizers. These are vital for the plant’s ability to produce 24,000 tons of battery-grade LHM annually. The procurement of this equipment marks a major step in establishing an automated and continuously operating Lithium Converter in Europe.
“Finalizing the commercial and technical contract conditions is a crucial milestone that brings clarity, minimizes risks, and enables efficient execution. We are pleased to have reached this stage with such a reputable partner as GEA, laying the groundwork for a successful collaboration,” said Frank Spellier, Head of Engineering at Rock Tech.
Through this partnership, Rock Tech will leverage GEA’s extensive expertise in lithium processing and its track record of delivering high-performance solutions worldwide. GEA has played a key role in several major lithium crystallization projects, including a lithium hydroxide plant in Argentina with a 25,000-ton annual capacity, two production plants in South Korea, a 20,000-ton-per-year facility in Europe, and advanced crystallization and drying technology for an Australian lithium plant. Additionally, GEA has contributed to multiple lithium hydroxide production lines in North America, focusing on solid-liquid separation technologies. These projects highlight GEA’s proven ability to support high-purity lithium hydroxide production for battery applications.
With key terms now finalized, including scope, services, warranties, and timelines, the next step is the formal signing of the contract, pending the project's Final Investment Decision (FID). As Rock Tech moves closer to finalizing the agreement, preparations are underway to integrate GEA’s high-automation solutions into the Guben site, ensuring continuous and efficient lithium production.
This collaboration reinforces Rock Tech’s commitment to advancing Europe’s lithium supply chain and supporting the transition to sustainable battery materials. By implementing cutting-edge processing technology, the Guben Lithium Converter will play a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for battery-grade lithium hydroxide in the electric vehicle and energy storage sectors.
Rock Tech Lithium envisions supplying the electric vehicle and battery industries with sustainable, locally produced lithium while striving for a 100% recycling rate. To strengthen supply chain resilience, the company plans to establish lithium converters in close proximity to its customers, starting with its proposed Lithium-Hydroxide Converter in Guben, Brandenburg, Germany. A second converter is planned for Red Rock, Ontario, Canada.
