PT Vale Indonesia Tbk, a leading nickel producer, and GEM Co., a major Chinese battery metal producer, have announced a strategic partnership to establish a net-zero nickel production facility in Indonesia's Central Sulawesi province.

The $1.42 billion high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) plant will have an annual capacity of 66,000 tonnes of mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP), a key ingredient in lithium-ion batteries. This significant investment aligns with Indonesia's ambitious goal to become a global leader in sustainable nickel production and supply chain.

Indonesia, with its abundant nickel reserves, is well-positioned to play a crucial role in the global energy transition. The partnership between PT Vale and GEM will further strengthen Indonesia's position as a major supplier of critical minerals for electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies.

The collaboration between PT Vale and GEM is grounded in a shared commitment to sustainable and responsible mining practices. Their new facility is designed to minimize environmental impact by incorporating cutting-edge technologies and eco-friendly processes. Notably, it aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, aligning with the companies' dedication to addressing climate change. Additionally, the project will invest in local communities through initiatives like infrastructure development, education, and healthcare.

Febriany Eddy, CEO of PT Vale said, "By integrating advanced technology, eco-friendly practices, and a commitment to net-zero production, we are shaping a future where Indonesia is recognized as a leader in sustainable industrial development."

The collaboration between PT Vale and GEM is expected to drive innovation and accelerate the adoption of sustainable mining practices. As the demand for battery metals continues to grow, this partnership will help ensure a reliable and environmentally responsible supply chain for the global electric vehicle industry.
