The Arctic Gateway Group (AGG) and Hudbay Minerals have announced a significant expansion of their partnership, setting the stage for a dramatic increase in critical mineral exports through the Port of Churchill. This move underscores the port's growing importance as a strategic gateway for Canada's resource sector and its crucial role in bolstering global supply chains.

AGG, an Indigenous- and community-owned company, revealed plans to double critical mineral shipments with Hudbay in 2025, building upon the successful zinc concentrate exports of the previous year. This ambitious target is coupled with a tripling of the port’s critical mineral storage capacity, demonstrating a firm commitment to long-term growth and operational efficiency.

The Port of Churchill, Canada’s only Arctic deep-water seaport serviced by rail, and the Hudson Bay Railway, operated by AGG, are vital links connecting Manitoba’s rich mineral resources to international markets. Chris Avery, CEO of AGG, emphasized the company’s dedication to infrastructure improvements, stating, “We’ve restored the Hudson Bay Railway to the best condition it has been in over 25 years, and we’re keeping it strong by investing in new advanced railway tools.”

The 2024 construction season saw AGG undertake substantial upgrades to the railway, including the installation of over 119,000 new railway ties, significant spot surfacing, and the rehabilitation of key crossings. The company also implemented advanced monitoring technology, such as drones, LiDAR, and artificial intelligence, to ensure high track quality and reduce travel times. These improvements have already resulted in a 10% reduction in travel time between The Pas and Churchill, enhancing the efficiency and reliability of the rail network.

Looking ahead to 2025, AGG has outlined a comprehensive plan for further port upgrades, including wharf rebuilding, dredging preparations, grain elevator maintenance, and long-term site design improvements. These investments are designed to meet the evolving needs of current and future customers, ensuring the port remains a competitive and efficient export hub.

Hudbay Minerals, a key partner in this expansion, sees significant potential in the Port of Churchill for critical mineral exports. Rob Carter, Hudbay’s vice president of the Manitoba business unit, highlighted the importance of these minerals for future technologies, stating, “These minerals are essential for the technologies that will power our future, and they are abundant in Manitoba.” He further emphasized Hudbay’s commitment to working alongside AGG to create a sustainable future for the region, leveraging the port and railway as a vital export gateway.

The increased activity at the Port of Churchill not only boosts Manitoba’s economy but also strengthens Canada’s position in the global critical minerals market.
