Perstorp, a leading global specialty chemicals innovator and subsidiary of PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG), has collaborated closely with Intel’s Open IP Advanced Liquid Cooling team to develop a high-performance synthetic thermal management fluid tailored for immersion cooling in data centers. This partnership, initiated in 2022, underscores their commitment to advancing sustainable cooling solutions for data centers.

Recently, at COMPUTEX 2024 in Taipei, both organizations unveiled their latest advancements. Intel spotlighted its Gaudi 3 AI accelerator, featuring the innovative Intel SuperFluid Cooling Technology. This technology harnesses Perstorp’s synthetic thermal management fluid, known for its optimal balance of low viscosity and high flash point.

Amidst increasing demand for AI applications, the tech industry races to enhance computing capabilities. Liquid cooling technology is pivotal for achieving high-density data center deployments. Stakeholders, including chip manufacturers, data center operators, and cooling system partners, collaborate to develop advanced solutions that not only boost heat-transfer efficiency but also reduce energy consumption, supporting sustainable technological advancements.

Intel's SuperFluid technology enhances cooling capacity, increasing from 500W per chip in conventional single-phase immersion cooling to 800W. By integrating Perstorp's advanced fluid, with its low viscosity properties, alongside flow field management, optimized system control, and intelligent Cooling Distribution Unit (CDU) management, cooling capacity per chip can reach up to 1500W. This innovation addresses the demands of future high-performance AI chips while aligning with global data center power usage effectiveness (PUE) standards. The partnership underscores Perstorp's commitment to advancing thermal management solutions that optimize efficiency and performance in data center environments.

Valentina Serra-Holm, Vice President for Engineered Fluids at Perstorp, highlighted the growing significance of liquid cooling in the AI sector. She emphasized Perstorp's recognized expertise in engineered fluids and its collaboration with Intel to develop an advanced synthetic thermal management fluid for Intel's SuperFluid technology. This fluid achieves high thermal performance while maintaining low viscosity, crucial for efficient immersion cooling solutions. Serra-Holm expressed Perstorp's commitment to furthering collaboration across its value chain partners to advance immersion cooling technologies. The goal is to drive innovation in thermal management, meeting the increasing demands of AI applications and supporting the broader adoption of liquid cooling solutions in high-performance computing environments.

In 2022, Perstorp entered Intel's Open IP Advanced Liquid Cooling ecosystem, focusing on immersion and cold plate cooling solutions. The collaboration has centered on developing a synthetic thermal management fluid with low viscosity, extended lifespan, and exceptional dielectric and fire-safety characteristics.
