OQ Chemicals has introduced a new co-solvent for water-based electrode coatings, named Oxvolt S221, which ensures crack-free surfaces on lithium-ion batteries after coating and drying. The automotive industry, which increasingly relies on high-performance, durable, and eco-friendly batteries for e-mobility, will benefit from this innovation. Oxvolt S221 is particularly effective for high-energy graphite anodes and has received approval from several battery cell manufacturers.

As a film-forming and coalescing agent, Oxvolt S221 guarantees a uniform coating of graphite anodes, enhancing electrode processing and reducing production failure rates compared to traditional water-based methods. By lowering the viscosity of the slurry, Oxvolt S221 improves slurry mixing properties and the overall quality of the electrodes after coating and initial drying.

Unlike N-methylpyrrolidone, Oxvolt S221 is biodegradable and non-toxic. It is water-soluble and used in small percentages as a co-solvent in the water, fully evaporating during the drying process without leaving residues.

Dr. Claudia Fischer, Director of Global Business Development at OQ Chemicals, noted that a pilot test conducted at CustomCells in Itzehoe demonstrated Oxvolt S221's potential to enhance the efficiency of graphite anode production. The test showed that this co-solvent can improve production efficiency without impacting the electrical properties or lifespan of the battery cells. Following C-rate and 300 charge cycle aging tests, performance results were comparable to those from a purely water-based manufacturing process.

Additionally, Oxvolt S221 has shown promising results as a co-solvent for LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) cathodes, improving electrode processability in water-based systems. This technology supports the development of high-performance, environmentally friendly, and high-energy batteries for electric vehicles, aligning with the industry's need for sustainable and efficient energy storage solutions.

OQ Chemicals produces Oxvolt S221 in the USA, ensuring a reliable supply chain for industrial customers in the Western market. For U.S. customers, the product complies with the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) requirements. OQ Chemicals also supports the EU Battery Passport initiative, which facilitates the traceability of chemicals in batteries and fosters a circular economy. Oxvolt is a registered trademark of OQ Chemicals.

OQ Chemicals, previously known as Oxea, is a leading global producer of Oxo Intermediates and Oxo Performance Chemicals, including alcohols, polyols, carboxylic acids, specialty esters, and amines. These chemicals are essential in the manufacture of high-quality coatings, lubricants, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, flavors and fragrances, printing inks, and plastics. With a workforce of over 1,400 employees, OQ Chemicals operates worldwide, serving customers in more than 60 countries. The company is a division of OQ, an integrated energy company based in Oman.
