OPAL Fuels Inc. continues to advance its mission of providing sustainable, low-carbon energy solutions by breaking ground on a new renewable natural gas (RNG) facility at the Kirby Canyon Landfill in Santa Clara County, California. The facility, OPAL Fuels' first in the state, will have an annual design capacity of approximately 0.66 million metric Btus (MMBtus), translating to the production of around 5.1 million gasoline gallon equivalents (GGE) of RNG each year. Utilizing state-of-the-art biogas capture technology, the project will convert methane produced from the natural decomposition of organic waste at the landfill into renewable natural gas, a cleaner alternative to diesel fuel for transportation.

This new RNG facility is part of OPAL Fuels’ larger strategy to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector, particularly in heavy-duty trucking, which is a significant contributor to air pollution. The RNG produced at Kirby Canyon will be distributed through OPAL Fuels' growing network of fuelling stations, primarily supporting natural gas-powered trucks that are seeking to reduce their carbon footprints and fuel expenses. With this project, OPAL Fuels is furthering its mission of providing "Cleaner, Cheaper, now" sustainable energy solutions that generate environmental, economic, and social benefits for communities, fleet operators, and partners.

Jonathan Maurer, co-CEO of OPAL Fuels, expressed the company's enthusiasm about the new facility, saying, “The construction of our 17th RNG project and our first in California is a significant milestone for OPAL Fuels. It reflects our ability to move projects from development through construction and into commercial operation, and it underscores our commitment to expanding our RNG production capacity across the country.”

Alongside its California expansion, OPAL Fuels has also launched its 11th operational RNG facility at the Polk County Municipal Landfill in Jones Corner, Florida. This marks the company’s second facility in the state and represents another step toward its goal of reducing the carbon footprint of transportation. The Polk County facility has a design capacity of 1.1 million MMBtu annually, equivalent to 8.5 million gasoline gallon equivalents (GGE). The RNG produced here will primarily replace diesel fuel in heavy-duty truck fleets, significantly reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, sulphur dioxide, and particulate matter.

The facility’s environmental benefits are substantial: the RNG produced will help eliminate over 900 heavy-duty trucks' worth of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, translating to cleaner air and lower transportation costs. By replacing diesel with RNG, OPAL Fuels is helping to combat climate change while also delivering economic benefits to fleet operators by reducing fuel costs.

Polk County Board Chairman Bill Braswell highlighted the advantages of the partnership, stating, “By harnessing the waste from our landfill and converting it into renewable energy, we’re not only reducing our greenhouse gas emissions but also creating an environmentally sustainable solution for our community. This project is a win-win for both our taxpayers and the environment.”

The successful operation of these facilities furthers OPAL Fuels’ position as a leader in the renewable energy sector. The company's total RNG production capacity has now reached approximately 8.8 million MMBtu annually, up from 3.8 million MMBtu at the time of its public debut in 2022. This growth reflects OPAL Fuels’ strong execution and commitment to scaling RNG production as a key element of the clean energy transition.

With the expansion into California and Florida, OPAL Fuels is well-positioned to continue driving the transition toward cleaner, more sustainable transportation fuels, contributing to both the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the growth of a circular economy based on waste-to-energy technologies. Through these new projects, OPAL Fuels is not only advancing its own business but also helping to accelerate the national and global shift toward cleaner energy.
