In 2004, Nippon Steel Corporation (Nippon Steel) and Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. of China (Baosteel) formed Baosteel-Nippon Steel Automotive Steel Sheets Co., Ltd. (BNA), a joint venture dedicated to producing and selling cold-rolled and hot-dip galvanized steel sheets for the automotive industry in China. Over the years, BNA has become a key supplier in the market, leveraging the technological expertise of Nippon Steel and the manufacturing strength of Baosteel. As the management period of BNA approaches its expiration on August 29, 2024, both companies are evaluating future strategies to maintain and enhance their presence in the competitive automotive steel market.

On July 23rd 2024, Nippon Steel announced an agreement with Baosteel to withdraw from their joint venture, Baosteel-Nippon Steel Automotive Steel Sheets Co., Ltd. (BNA), at the end of the current management period. This decision entails Nippon Steel transferring its entire stake in BNA to Baosteel, pending regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. The agreement marks a strategic shift for both companies, with Nippon Steel focusing on other ventures while Baosteel aims to strengthen its position in the automotive steel sheet market by fully integrating BNA into its operations. This transition is expected to conclude by August 29, 2024.

Baosteel-Nippon Steel Automotive Steel Sheets Co., Ltd. (BNA), located in Shanghai, China, specializes in the manufacture and sale of cold-rolled and hot-dip galvanized steel sheets for the automotive industry. Established with a capital of RMB 3 billion, the joint venture is equally owned by Nippon Steel and Baosteel, each holding a 50% share. The partnership has facilitated significant advancements in automotive steel production, leveraging the combined expertise of both companies. As the management period nears its end on August 29, 2024, Nippon Steel plans to transfer its stake entirely to Baosteel, subject to regulatory approvals.
