MAIRE has announced that its subsidiary, MyRemono, has signed a Toll Manufacturing Agreement with Röhm. Under this agreement, Röhm will provide PMMA (Polymethyl methacrylate) scrap material, which MyRemono will process using its proprietary NXRe™ technology. This technology is a highly efficient molten metal depolymerization process for the continuous chemical recycling of PMMA, transforming the scrap into ultra-pure monomers of virgin-like quality. Röhm will then take the recycled Methyl Methacrylate monomer (rMMA), which will be reused to manufacture new PMMA products, completing a fully circular recycling process. MyRemono will receive a processing fee from Röhm for this service.
This agreement is part of a broader initiative to create a Europe-wide network for PMMA recycling, which also includes partners Pekutherm and Polyvantis. Pekutherm will manage the logistics and sorting of PMMA materials, while Polyvantis will specialize in their mechanical recycling. MyRemono will oversee the chemical recycling of PMMA scrap at its first-of-its-kind industrial-scale plant currently under development in Italy, with support from the EU Innovation Fund. The plant, expected to be completed in 2026, will have an initial capacity to process 5,000 tons of PMMA annually, which is enough to produce around 10 million car taillights. This demonstrates the significant potential for recycling to replace virgin resources in manufacturing.
The recycled Methyl Methacrylate monomer (rMMA) produced using the NXRe™ technology is anticipated to have a carbon footprint reduction of over 90% compared to traditional virgin MMA production methods. MyRemono has invested €15 million in the development and scaling of the technology, with funding primarily from a bank loan and a €4 million grant from the EU Innovation Fund.
This agreement marks a significant milestone for NEXTCHEM, as it sets the foundation for licensing its NXRe™ PMMA technology. This technology could also be applied to the chemical depolymerization of other value-added materials, such as polystyrene and polyolefins, expanding its potential impact. MAIRE CEO Alessandro Bernini emphasized that the NXRe™ technology plays a crucial role in advancing circularity, positioning it as a core element of the company’s sustainable materials and circular solutions. The new recycling plant and the industrial consortium it supports highlight the importance of disruptive technologies in addressing current sustainability challenges.
