MAIRE (MAIRE.MI) has announced that its subsidiary, NEXTCHEM, has been awarded a feasibility study for a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) project in collaboration with PT Tripatra Engineers and Constructors. The project, located in Sei Mangkei, Indonesia, involves the joint development of a small-scale, modular SAF plant designed to produce 60,000 tons of SAF per year. The plant will utilize regionally sourced feedstocks, including used cooking oil and palm oil mill effluent.
The initial phase of this partnership involves conducting a feasibility study to determine the optimal design and configuration for the SAF plant. NEXTCHEM will apply its proprietary technologies to this process. The company offers a comprehensive solution that includes NX PTU™ technology, a hydrogen production unit, and NX SAFTM Bio technology—a hydrotreated esters and fatty acids (HEFA) process designed for efficient SAF production.
NEXTCHEM's approach utilizes second-generation vegetable oils and residual fats. These feedstocks are pre-treated using NX PTU™ technology to ensure purity. The refined feedstock is then processed into SAF using NX SAFTM Bio technology, which incorporates hydrogen to produce an ultra-low carbon SAF. This fuel can reduce aviation emissions by up to 95% compared to traditional fossil fuels. The SAF plant’s modular and compact design, coupled with a high level of standardization, ensures rapid project execution and adaptability for small-scale operations in various locations.
Alessandro Bernini, CEO of MAIRE, highlighted the significance of this agreement: “This partnership demonstrates our commitment to driving the energy transition with advanced technologies and comprehensive solutions. MAIRE is well-positioned to decarbonize high-impact sectors like aviation by leveraging our integrated approach, from project development through to full execution capabilities.”
