Neste has entered into a partnership with PTL Marine to facilitate the distribution of Neste MY Renewable Diesel to the marine industry throughout the State of California, USA. This collaborative effort aims to provide the marine sector in California with easier access to renewable diesel, reinforcing the state's commitment to reducing emissions and fostering a more sustainable future.

The initiative is particularly pertinent in light of California's Commercial Harbor Craft (CHC) regulation, implemented by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), which came into effect on January 1, 2023. This regulatory framework mandates that commercial harbor craft vessels operating in California's ports and coastal areas must transition from ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) to renewable diesel, known locally as R99 or R100. The objective is to mitigate emissions, particularly particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, associated with vessels plying their trade in the state's harbors, ports, navigable waterways, marinas, and marine navigation districts.

Ports play a pivotal role in the U.S. economy, but the reliance on fossil fuels for port-related operations has significant implications for public health and the environment. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), emissions from port-related activities, including shipping and harbor crafts, contribute to air pollution and climate change. In this context, CARB's research indicates that renewable diesel, when compared to fossil diesel, can yield substantial benefits.

Furthermore, renewable diesel presents an immediately available solution to curbing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Neste MY Renewable Diesel, with its similar chemical composition to fossil diesel, can be employed as a drop-in solution in all diesel-powered vessels without the need for significant investments in new vehicle fleets, engine modifications, or fuel distribution infrastructure. The renewable diesel also meets all of CARB's requirements, including a flash point of 140°F or greater, while maintaining strong performance standards.

PTL Marine, as a key partner in this endeavor, is well-equipped to deliver Neste MY Renewable Diesel to customers in a timely manner, offering three modes of delivery – truck to the vessel, dockside services, and barge to the vessel. This versatility in delivery options caters to a wide range of harbor craft, from small ferries to large commercial fishing boats, as well as offshore working vessels and large cargo ships. This accessibility ensures that renewable fuel is readily available for various marine applications.

Steven Taylor, Business Development Manager at PTL Marine, expressed satisfaction in collaborating with Neste and being part of an initiative that aligns with their values and commitment to innovation. The partnership between Neste and PTL Marine is seen as a promising venture that promises to have a positive impact on the availability and use of renewable diesel within California's marine industry. It not only aligns with the state's environmental goals but also supports the global effort to transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions, particularly in critical sectors like marine transportation.
