On 4th August 2022, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, under the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, through a notification (Notification no. 24/2015-2020), stated that the need for a BIS certificate to import food grade hexane is withdrawn forthwith.

The Directorate has quoted in the notification that, by exercising abilities given by Section 3 & Section 5 of FT (D&R) Act, 1992, read with passages 1.02 and 2.01 of the overseas exchange strategy, 2015-2020, as altered occasionally, the union government has like this changed the approach state of HS code 29021100 under part 29 of ITC (HS), 2022, Schedule-1 (Import strategy).

It added that in correspondence to this, food-grade hexane at SI. No. 52 of Appendix 3 to Schedule 1 - import strategy-ITC(HS) 2022 is removed from the rundown of things under compulsory BIS accreditation, and the prerequisite for BIS affirmation for import of food grade hexane is eliminated with immediate impact with an endorsement of industries and commerce minister.
