Mitsubishi Chemical Group (MCG Group) has announced a significant decision to expand the production capacity of its "Mitsubishi Synthetic Silica," a highly pure synthetic silica powder used in the semiconductor manufacturing process. This expansion will take place at the Kyushu-Fukuoka Plant, located in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. The expanded operations are scheduled to commence in September 2028. Mitsubishi Synthetic Silica plays a crucial role in the production of quartz crucibles used to manufacture semiconductor silicon ingots and in the creation of high-purity quartz parts for semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

The product is renowned for its ultra-high purity, which is essential for the semiconductor industry. Quartz crucibles are used in the process of growing semiconductor silicon ingots, a critical step in the production of semiconductor wafers. The quality of these wafers directly impacts the performance and reliability of semiconductor devices. To ensure high-quality wafers, the surface of the quartz crucibles must be free from impurities that could degrade the wafers. Mitsubishi Synthetic Silica is highly competitive in this field because it achieves the world’s highest level of purity for sand-type silica. This remarkable purity is made possible through advanced manufacturing technology that MCG Group has developed and refined over many years.

The decision to increase production capacity was driven by the growing demand from the semiconductor industry. As the market for semiconductors continues to expand, particularly with the rise of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G, and electric vehicles, the need for high-quality materials like Mitsubishi Synthetic Silica has surged. By expanding its production, MCG Group aims to meet this increasing demand and ensure that its customers in the semiconductor industry have a reliable and stable supply of high-performance materials.

The Kyushu-Fukuoka Plant, which will be responsible for the expanded production, is located at 1-1 Kurosakishiroishi, Yahatanishi-ku, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. With this expansion, the plant’s production capacity will increase by 35% over its current capacity. This enhancement is a testament to MCG Group’s long-term commitment to supporting the semiconductor industry by ensuring the availability of high-quality, stable supplies of essential materials.

Mitsubishi Chemical Group offers a comprehensive range of materials and services designed to support various stages of semiconductor manufacturing. Through this expansion, MCG Group is reinforcing its dedication to the semiconductor industry, ensuring that it can continue to meet the growing demand for materials that are critical to the production of advanced semiconductor components. The increased capacity will also help MCG Group maintain its position as a leading supplier of high-quality materials for semiconductor manufacturers around the world.
