Southern Peru Copper Corporation, a subsidiary of Grupo Mexico, has chosen Metso to supply advanced tankhouse material handling solutions for their copper cathode production facilities in Ilo and Toquepala, Peru. The order, valued at over EUR 10 million, has been recorded in Metso’s Minerals segment for the second quarter of 2024.

Metso’s delivery will include state-of-the-art cathode stripping machines for both the Ilo electrorefinery and the Toquepala electrowinning process. These machines are designed with a proven framework to ensure high safety standards and long-term reliability. They also feature modern robotic electrode handling systems that optimize layout and material handling efficiency within the existing processes.

"We are delighted to continue our long-standing collaboration with Grupo Mexico," said Mikko Rantaharju, Vice President of the Hydrometallurgy business line at Metso. "At Ilo, we will implement new cathode handling technology in the tankhouse, while at Toquepala, we will replace the existing stripping machine with a new one. Metso’s cathode stripping machines will ensure stable production and meet the material handling requirements of both plants."
