Metso has obtained a contract with Beijing Shougang International Engineering Technology Co. Ltd (BSIET) to supply a traveling grate pelletizing plant for Ruifeng Iron and Steel Group Co., Ltd, situated in Tangshan, Hebei province, China. The agreement encompasses the engineering and design of the indurating machine and process gas fan systems, alongside the supply of proprietary equipment, instrumentation, control systems, as well as supervisory services and technical training.

The plant will incorporate Metso's Compact-sized pellet plant, specifically a traveling grate pellet indurating furnace, designed to optimize performance in steel production. Spanning three meters in width, the facility will have a production capacity of 1.7 million tons per annum (MTPA), with pellet production expected to commence in 2025. This innovative plant will enable Ruifeng to replace multiple shaft furnaces with a state-of-the-art traveling grate pellet production line, contributing significantly to carbon emission reductions and compliance with environmental regulations.

Matthias Gabriel, Director of Ferrous at Metso, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, "We are delighted to support Ruifeng in achieving their decarbonization targets with our advanced technology. The increasing interest in our compact-sized pellet plants in China is very encouraging. These plants allow mining companies to enhance their value chain and facilitate decentralized steel-making concepts such as mini mills. They are also flexible and cost-efficient. Our high standardization in design and project execution allows us to offer optimized delivery times."

Metso has been collaborating with BSIET on traveling grate pelletizing plants since 2008, successfully constructing 11 pellet plants within the Chinese market to date. This new project marks the 12th pelletizing plant developed through the partnership between Metso and BSIET. Last year, they signed a contract for two compact-sized iron ore pelletizing plants for Chengde Zhaofeng Iron and Steel Group Co., Ltd, also in Hebei province.

The iron ore pelletizing process offered by Metso is designed to produce uniform pellets, ensuring high performance and quality while maintaining low investment and operating costs. The technology also emphasizes reduced energy consumption and emissions, aligning with global sustainability goals.

With the establishment of this new plant, Metso continues to reinforce its position in the iron and steel sector, demonstrating a commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship. The collaboration not only supports Ruifeng’s operational efficiency but also reflects Metso’s strategic focus on developing eco-friendly solutions for the steel industry in China.

Metso is a frontrunner in sustainable technologies, providing a wide range of solutions and services for the global aggregates, minerals processing, and metals refining sectors. The company enhances energy and water efficiency for its customers, boosts productivity, and mitigates environmental risks through its expertise in products and services. Metso is dedicated to driving positive change. Based in Espoo, Finland, Metso has a workforce of over 17,000 employees across nearly 50 countries, with sales reaching approximately EUR 5.4 billion in 2023.
