MAIRE has announced that its Sustainable Technology Solutions branch, NEXTCHEM, through subsidiary Stamicarbon, a leading nitrogen fertilizer technology licensor, has secured a licensing and Process Design Package (PDP) contract for the installation of a tertiary abatement unit at Soluciones Químicas' nitric acid plant located in Minatitlán, Veracruz, Mexico. This project will leverage Stamicarbon's proprietary tertiary abatement technology, specifically designed to achieve significant emissions reductions for nitric acid plants. By incorporating this advanced system, the plant will not only meet stringent environmental regulations but also make strides toward reducing its overall carbon footprint, aligning with global climate change mitigation efforts.

The technology Stamicarbon will implement is part of the NX STAMI Nitrates™ portfolio, a series of solutions aimed at improving the environmental and operational efficiency of fertilizer production processes. Central to this project is a specialized system tailored to reduce nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas that typically arises from the tail gas stream during nitric acid production. Nitrous oxide has a global warming potential approximately 300 times that of carbon dioxide, making its abatement crucial for environmentally responsible operations. By removing N2O emissions effectively, Stamicarbon's solution not only helps the plant align with current environmental standards but also enhances its role in supporting sustainable industrial practices.

This initiative reflects MAIRE’s ongoing dedication to environmental stewardship within the fertilizer industry. Alessandro Bernini, CEO of MAIRE, noted, “This award underscores our commitment to providing advanced solutions that drive environmental stewardship in the fertilizer industry.” With this contract, MAIRE continues to expand its presence in the sustainable technologies space, providing solutions that address the pressing need for lower-emission production methods in the industrial sector.

The installation of this tertiary abatement unit at the Minatitlán plant represents a significant step forward in the region’s efforts to enhance air quality and mitigate the impacts of industrial emissions. Through Stamicarbon’s expertise and NEXTCHEM’s sustainable technology solutions, MAIRE aims to contribute meaningfully to reducing greenhouse gases in Mexico’s industrial sectors. The deployment of such advanced technology at nitric acid plants has the potential to set new standards for the industry, encouraging wider adoption of environmentally friendly practices in fertilizer and chemical manufacturing.

MAIRE S.p.A. heads a technology and engineering group focused on developing and deploying cutting-edge solutions that drive the Energy Transition forward. MAIRE provides Sustainable Technology Solutions and Integrated Engineering & Construction (E&C) Solutions across sectors such as nitrogen fertilizers, hydrogen, circular carbon, fuels, chemicals, and polymers. Operating in 45 countries, MAIRE creates global value through the expertise of over 8,300 employees and the contributions of more than 20,000 individuals engaged in its projects worldwide.
