Framingham-based startup Magnomer, a developer of functional coatings designed to improve sorting and separation in existing recycling systems for packaging, has joined the Canada Plastics Pact (CPP). This marks the first time an inks and coatings company has become a member of the CPP.

The CPP is a collaborative effort uniting various organizations and government bodies across Canada's plastics value chain. Their mission is to eliminate plastic pollution and waste while establishing a circular economy for plastics. The organization achieves this by identifying, testing, and implementing solutions to overcome systemic challenges in plastic recycling.

"We firmly believe in the power of collaboration to tackle global issues like enhancing plastic circularity," said Ravish Majithia, President and CEO of Magnomer. "We are thrilled to be part of this crucial conversation in Canada and eager to contribute our expertise regarding the role of inks and coatings in improving recyclability to the Canada Plastics Pact."

Magnomer's solution centers around their patented Magmark SS coatings, which introduce magnetic and optical detection properties to shrink sleeves. This allows for proper sorting and separation of these sleeves during the recycling process using existing magnets already integrated into recycling facilities.

The Magmark SS coatings are transparent, food-safe, and can be printed directly onto labels during the converting stage. This eliminates the need for any modifications to branding or design. Additionally, these coatings are compatible with both PETG and crystallized polyethylene terephthalate (cPET) films.

Cher Mereweather, Managing Director of the Canada Plastics Pact, expressed her satisfaction with this evolving partnership. "We are delighted to welcome more innovators like Magnomer who are actively addressing plastic packaging challenges, such as PETG, a material currently on our elimination list. By working together with Magnomer, we have the potential to transform PETG from a problematic material into one that can be efficiently captured and recycled."

The effectiveness of Magmark SS has been acknowledged by the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) based on successful commercial-scale trials. Furthermore, How2Recycle has pre-qualified these coatings for use on PETG, ensuring compliance with U.S. Plastics Pact guidelines.
