In November 2024, the Magnesium Sulphate market showcased bullish movement in the North American market driven by rising production costs and delayed supplies caused by ongoing supply chain disruptions.
The Magnesium Sulphate supplies were limited in the North American market from Asian exporters in the first half of the month due to supply chain disruptions caused by Typhoon Kong-Rey, a consequence of the La Niña phenomenon. The storm, which hit Taiwan on 31st October 2024 moved northward and led to disruptions in container shipping services across the East China Sea on 2nd November 2024. It also led to shortages of raw materials and delays in production. Port congestion and vessel delays in eastern China continue to affect the smooth flow of goods, further hindering supply availability and market players raised Magnesium Sulphate quotations amid firm demand from buyers for procurement purposes ahead of the peak winter season. Meanwhile, in China, a leading producer and exporter of Magnesium Sulphate, production levels have remained stable. The availability of key feedstocks, Sulphuric Acid and Magnesium Oxide, was moderate, providing average cost support. However, the increase in energy costs during the winter months contributed to higher variable production costs for Magnesium Sulphate.
At the same time, the demand for Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom Salt) remains steady in the pharmaceutical sector, driven by its use as a muscle relaxant for spasms and seizures. This is especially true given the increased risk of respiratory infections and flu in winter. Epsom salt is also used in nebulizer solutions to treat respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchospasm, which are more prevalent during colder months. Simultaneously, consumption rates of Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom Salt) were steady, driven by its role in addressing sleep deprivation caused by low magnesium intake. As magnesium promotes relaxation and improves sleep quality, growing awareness of its benefits for sleep disorders has increased demand for Epsom Salt as a natural supplement for better sleep and overall wellness.
According to the ChemAnalyst data sources, the Magnesium Sulphate CFR USGC quotations in the USA hovered at USD 680/MT at the end of November 2024 after witnessing an increase of 2.3% in the last month's quotations.
As per the estimation, Magnesium Sulphate demand is expected to remain steady in the pharmaceutical sector, driven by its continued use in various medical treatments. However, the market is facing challenges due to supply chain disruptions caused by increased rainfall and storms, a direct result of the La Niña phenomenon. These weather conditions are causing logistical delays and hindering the smooth flow of goods. Additionally, rising energy prices during the winter months are escalating operational costs, which may further strain supply availability and drive-up pricing. As a result, these factors could lead to ongoing market volatility, with Magnesium Sulphate prices likely to rise towards the end of the year.
