LyondellBasell (LYB), a global leader in the chemical industry, has taken a significant step in its energy transition journey by securing two major power purchase agreements (PPAs) in Europe. These long-term agreements provide price stability and reinforce LYB’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while supporting the shift to renewable energy.

Chris Cain, LYB’s Senior Vice President of Net Zero Transition Strategy, emphasized the value of these agreements, stating, “Adding these long-term agreements to our portfolio supports price stability to increase the use of renewable energy in a value-accretive way. Our diverse global portfolio of renewable energy not only reduces our carbon footprint but also supports our customers’ ability to meet their CO2 reduction objectives.”

One of the agreements is a 15-year PPA with Vattenfall, under which LYB will procure 450 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of offshore wind energy annually. This renewable power will support LYB’s low-carbon initiatives in Germany, including operations at the company’s MoReTec-1 plant in Wesseling. The MoReTec-1 plant is LYB’s first commercial-scale advanced recycling facility, designed to process plastic waste equivalent to what over 1.2 million German citizens generate per year. Using LYB’s proprietary recycling technology, the plant converts plastic waste into valuable raw materials, contributing to circular economy efforts.

In addition, LYB has entered into a 10-year PPA with wpd, securing 79 GWh annually of onshore wind power from the Licata project in Sicily, Italy. Set to commence in 2026, this agreement will provide a stable supply of renewable electricity to LYB’s production site and research center in Ferrara, Italy. The Ferrara facility plays a crucial role in polymer innovation, housing the world’s largest Ziegler-Natta catalyst development and production site. It also manufactures polypropylene and advanced polyolefin resins, which are essential in applications such as food packaging, medical products, and automotive components.

Beyond meeting LYB’s own sustainability goals, these agreements contribute to strengthening Europe’s renewable energy infrastructure by integrating wind power into the grid. By prioritizing renewable energy investments, LYB continues to position itself as a leader in the industry’s energy transition, aligning with global decarbonization efforts while ensuring long-term operational resilience.

LyondellBasell, a global chemical industry leader, provides solutions for sustainable living. Using advanced technology and strategic investments, they're driving a circular, low-carbon economy. LYB strives to create value for its customers, investors, and communities. As a top global polymer producer and a leader in polyolefin technologies, they develop, manufacture, and market high-quality, innovative products used in diverse applications, including sustainable transportation, food safety, clean water, and healthcare.
