Lummus Technology, a renowned global provider of cutting-edge process technologies and sustainable energy solutions, has unveiled its groundbreaking ethanol to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) process technology for commercial use. This pioneering technology offers aviation industry operators a robust, large-scale solution to combat greenhouse gas emissions effectively.

Leon de Bruyn, President and CEO of Lummus Technology, emphasized the company's distinct advantage in the field due to its extensive commercial expertise throughout the ethanol-to-SAF production process. He explained that Lummus leverages proven, commercially viable technologies, expertly integrated to meet the aviation sector's increasing demand for SAF while supporting its mission to decarbonize.

Lummus' ethanol to SAF technology presents a dependable and secure solution by seamlessly integrating ethanol into ethylene (EtE), olefin oligomerization, and hydrogenation processes. This innovative configuration optimizes SAF production, simultaneously minimizing capital expenditures (CAPEX), operating expenses (OPEX), and carbon emissions.

At the core of this transformative process lies Lummus' strategic partnership with Braskem, focusing on green ethylene production, a critical component in the move towards a carbon-neutral economy. Braskem, a leader in the field, has operated an ethanol dehydration unit in Brazil since 2010. Employing the EtE EverGreen technology, this unit serves as a reliable foundation, generating 260 kilotons of ethylene per year from ethanol. Lummus has seamlessly integrated this world-scale dehydration process into its portfolio alongside light olefins oligomerization and advanced hydroprocessing technologies, leveraging its partnership with Chevron through Chevron Lummus Global, a joint venture with Chevron.

This collaborative effort has resulted in a comprehensive solution for producing SAF from ethanol. Lummus and Braskem's combined expertise ensures the efficient utilization of bioethanol while aligning with industry-wide efforts to create a carbon-neutral economy, a pivotal step in the fight against climate change.

The aviation industry's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning to sustainable alternatives has placed increasing pressure on the development of SAF technologies. Lummus' breakthrough ethanol based SAF process technology answers this call with a commercially viable and eco-friendly solution.

SAF is gaining traction as a crucial component in mitigating aviation's environmental impact, as it offers a sustainable alternative to conventional aviation fuels. By converting ethanol into SAF, Lummus Technology is contributing to the industry's mission to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly.

The process itself combines ethanol feedstock with ethylene, a key building block for various chemical products, including aviation fuel. This innovative approach streamlines production while keeping costs in check, ensuring the economic viability of SAF for the aviation sector.

Lummus Technology's SAF process is a significant step forward in the aviation industry's journey towards sustainability. It addresses both the pressing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the industry's growing demand for eco-friendly aviation fuels. By embracing ethanol-based SAF, Lummus is facilitating the aviation sector's transition to more environmentally responsible practices.

The collaboration between Lummus and Braskem represents a powerful union of expertise and resources. With Braskem's proven track record in ethanol dehydration and Lummus' cutting-edge technologies, the partnership is poised to drive significant advancements in sustainable aviation fuel production.

As the aviation industry continues to grapple with the environmental impact of traditional aviation fuels, SAF is emerging as a viable solution. Lummus Technology's ethanol-based SAF process marks a milestone in this ongoing transformation, offering a commercially viable and environmentally friendly pathway to greener skies. By reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable practices, Lummus is at the forefront of the aviation sector's commitment to a more eco-conscious future.
