Lummus Technology, a globally recognized leader in process technologies and energy solutions, has achieved a major breakthrough in the fight against per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as "forever chemicals." The company recently announced the successful startup and operation of its PFAS destruction demonstration unit, marking a significant step toward solving one of the most persistent environmental challenges. This commercial-ready, full-scale system utilizes advanced technology developed in collaboration with Element Six (E6) to completely eliminate PFAS compounds rather than merely modifying them.

By integrating this cutting-edge solution, Lummus is empowering industrial and municipal water treatment operators to remove PFAS from their water supplies, significantly improving water safety for communities. PFAS chemicals have long been a concern due to their resistance to natural degradation, making their presence in drinking water and the environment a serious issue. The demonstration unit ensures that these toxic substances are not just diluted or altered but completely destroyed, helping to safeguard both public health and the ecosystem.

“With our full-scale demonstration unit, drinking water and wastewater operators can witness firsthand the destruction of PFAS,” said Leon de Bruyn, President and Chief Executive Officer of Lummus Technology. “Providing direct access to this technology allows operators to evaluate how it fits their facility’s needs while also highlighting the Lummus Water group’s scalable and cost-effective solutions for addressing PFAS contamination.”

The PFAS destruction unit is housed at Lummus Green Circle Labs in LaPorte, Texas. Unlike conventional treatment methods that may only modify PFAS compounds to pass analytical testing, this unit breaks down the strong carbon-fluoride bonds that make these chemicals so persistent. Customers can bring water samples to the facility for testing and receive certified data that can be used for regulatory reviews and compliance improvements. Additionally, Lummus has made the technology commercially available for industrial and municipal water treatment facilities that wish to conduct on-site destruction of PFAS compounds, giving them greater control over their water purification processes.

In addition to the destruction technology, Lummus Water offers an integrated and comprehensive PFAS management solution that includes in-house analytical services. These services provide highly precise testing, capable of detecting PFAS at levels as low as parts per trillion. By utilizing these advanced capabilities, water and wastewater treatment operators can accurately assess contamination levels and monitor the effectiveness of their treatment processes over time.

With the introduction of this groundbreaking technology, Lummus Technology continues to demonstrate its commitment to innovation and sustainability. By providing real, scalable solutions to eliminate PFAS, the company is helping water facilities take proactive steps toward a cleaner and safer future. This milestone underscores Lummus’s leadership in environmental protection and its dedication to tackling some of the world’s most pressing water quality challenges.
