Lotte Energy Materials Corporation has successfully completed the development of next-generation nickel-plated copper foil, designed for use in high-density, all solid-state batteries (ASSBs) for electric vehicles (EVs). As South Korea's leading copper foil manufacturer, Lotte has pioneered the technology to produce nickel-plated copper foil, which is seen as a critical material for advanced sulphur-based batteries.

The nickel plating on both sides of the copper foil offers exceptional electrical conductivity and strong corrosion resistance, making it an ideal electrode current collector for sulphide-based ASSBs. Lotte has emphasized its ability to customize the nickel-plated foil to meet specific customer needs by adjusting the thickness of the nickel plating and the strength of the copper foil, ensuring it suits various battery applications.

A key feature of this nickel-plated foil is its enhanced adhesion to active materials, achieved through a specialized surface treatment, all while maintaining its original properties and functions. The foil remains free from corrosion or discoloration, which can result from chemical reactions. While standard copper foil works for traditional lithium-ion batteries, sulphide-based ASSBs require corrosion-resistant materials, such as stainless steel, nickel foil, or nickel-plated foil, due to the corrosive effects of sulphur on copper. However, stainless steel and nickel foils are considered too costly, making nickel-plated copper foil a more viable and promising alternative for these advanced batteries.

Lotte notes that only a few companies have the capability to manufacture nickel-plated foil, and through early collaboration with domestic battery firms, it has gained a competitive edge by optimizing its production process. The company is currently conducting sample evaluations of the nickel-plated foil, tailored to the manufacturing processes and form factors of key domestic customers. Additionally, Lotte is engaged in various nickel surface treatment studies to further secure adhesion to active materials. The company plans to share the results with the market once it reaches the order stage.

This development positions Lotte Energy Materials Corporation at the forefront of innovation in battery materials, particularly for next-generation electric vehicles, by offering a cost-effective and highly efficient solution for advanced battery technologies.

Established in 1987, Lotte Energy Materials (LEM) has distinguished itself in the advanced materials industry with its innovative hybrid Elecfoil products, known for their ultra-thin, high-strength, and high-elongation characteristics. LEM's technology has garnered acclaim from top global advanced battery manufacturers. In March 2023, Lotte Energy Materials became part of the LOTTE Group, marking its integration into the larger conglomerate. LEM is achieving annual growth as a leading materials company, supported by its global presence with facilities in Malaysia, Europe, and North America, and by increasing its use of recycled raw materials.
