Lithium Universe has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Lafarge Canada, a leading cement producer, for the exclusive supply of Aluminosilicate Secondary Product (ASCR) from its Bécancour Lithium Carbonate Refinery in Quebec. This agreement positions Lithium Universe as a key supplier of industrial by-products while enhancing sustainability in the cement sector.

The Bécancour Lithium Carbonate Refinery is designed to produce up to 18,270 tonnes per annum (tpa) of lithium carbonate, utilizing advanced technology from the Jiangsu Lithium Carbonate Plant. In addition to lithium carbonate, the facility is expected to generate approximately 130,000 tpa of ASCR, a by-product rich in silica, aluminum oxide, and ferric oxide. These components enhance the compressive strength of cement while reducing production costs, making ASCR a valuable additive for the construction industry.

Under the MoU, Lafarge Canada will collaborate with Lithium Universe to finalize a definitive supply and purchase agreement. The partnership aligns with the cement producer’s sustainability goals by integrating industrial by-products into its manufacturing processes, reducing waste, and contributing to a circular economy.

A recently completed pre-feasibility study highlights the economic viability of the Bécancour Refinery, even under low lithium price conditions. This strengthens Lithium Universe’s position to capitalize on the growing lithium demand while establishing a sustainable supply chain for secondary products.

Lithium Universe Chairman Iggy Tan welcomed the partnership, stating: “This is a significant milestone for Lithium Universe as we join forces with Lafarge Canada to enhance North America’s battery materials supply chain while driving innovation in Canada’s cement industry. Our collaboration will not only strengthen the Bécancour refinery’s secondary product supply chain but also contribute to Québec’s circular economy and promote greener construction materials.”

Beyond cement applications, Lithium Universe’s Bécancour Refinery is a strategic initiative aimed at addressing North America’s “lithium conversion gap.” The company seeks to bolster the supply chain for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), particularly within the electric vehicle (EV) industry, by converting spodumene into lithium chemicals essential for EV battery plants.

The lithium market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with over 20 major manufacturers projected to establish around 1,000 GW of battery production capacity by 2028. Lithium Universe estimates that lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) demand will surge to approximately 850,000 tpa to support this expansion.

This partnership with Lafarge Canada not only strengthens Lithium Universe’s position in the lithium supply chain but also contributes to national security objectives by reducing reliance on foreign lithium converters. The collaboration marks a step toward a more resilient and sustainable North American industrial ecosystem.
