Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has announced a new line of sustainable yellow iron oxide pigments under its Bayferrox brand. These pigments, part of the company's Scopeblue portfolio, offer a significantly reduced carbon footprint, addressing the growing demand for eco-friendly materials in the paint and coatings industry.

The new Bayferrox Scopeblue product line includes micronized iron oxide yellow pigments Bayferrox 3910, 3910 LV, and 3920. These high-quality pigments are ideal for sophisticated formulations, such as pigment pastes and highly pigmented facade paints, offering significant potential for creating more sustainable end products.

The Scopeblue label designates products manufactured with a high proportion of sustainable raw materials and a considerably lower carbon footprint compared to conventional alternatives. This launch reinforces LANXESS's commitment to sustainability and its proactive approach to meeting evolving industry needs.

A key advantage of the Scopeblue pigments is their significantly reduced product carbon footprint (PCF), approximately 35% lower than standard Bayferrox grades. This reduction is achieved using more eco-efficient raw materials derived from renewable energy sources. This reduction has been independently verified by TÜV Rheinland through a certified life cycle assessment. Furthermore, the sourcing and utilization of these lower-emission raw materials are certified according to the ISCC Plus (“International Sustainability and Carbon Certification”) standard, employing the mass balance method.

Importantly, the Bayferrox Scopeblue pigments are designed for seamless integration into existing paint systems. They possess the same chemical composition, color, and functional properties as conventionally produced Bayferrox pigments, ensuring that manufacturers can easily incorporate them without compromising product performance. This "drop-in" compatibility simplifies the transition to more sustainable formulations and minimizes the need for extensive reformulation.

"With the launch of our new, low-emission yellow pigment product line under the Bayferrox brand, we aim to support our customers in making their own value chains more sustainable," stated Daniela Schmitt, Head of Global Marketing at the LANXESS Inorganic Pigments business unit. "Having been the first manufacturer to help advance the introduction of environmental product declarations for iron oxide pigments, LANXESS is now building on its role as a sustainability pioneer with the launch of this new low-emission product line."

LANXESS recognizes that sustainability is not just an environmental imperative but also a key driver of business value. The company systematically evaluates its products from economic, ecological, and social perspectives. By developing innovative processes and sustainable products like the new Bayferrox Scopeblue line, LANXESS is actively contributing to the creation of more sustainable value chains for its customers.
