Koch Modular Process Systems has unveiled an exciting collaboration with PPL Corp. (PPL) to serve as a crucial research partner for a groundbreaking carbon dioxide (CO2) capture project. This transformative initiative has secured a substantial $72 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED), signifying the government's recognition and support for advancements in clean energy technology.

Designated as a "Large-Scale Pilot" within the carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) industry, the project's focal point is the development of a state-of-the-art 20-megawatt research system situated at Cane Run, Kentucky. This cutting-edge facility is anticipated to capture an impressive 90,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, making a significant contribution to mitigating carbon emissions. Koch Modular's involvement in this project is a continuation of its past successes, particularly its construction of a smaller 0.7-megawatt pilot plant for the University of Kentucky in 2014. The leap in scale for this new venture underscores Koch Modular's pivotal role in advancing carbon capture methodologies and facilitating their transition to commercialization.

The primary objective of this ambitious endeavor is to refine and ready the technology for widespread commercial use. Leveraging Koch Modular's expertise in designing CO2 removal processes and equipment is deemed critical to optimizing the efficiency and economic viability of the CO2 capture system. Central to this technology is a process previously developed by the University of Kentucky, which demonstrated its effectiveness in the 0.7 megawatt pilot plant funded by the DOE. The collaboration brings together key stakeholders, including PPL, the University of Kentucky, Koch Modular, and others, highlighting their longstanding partnership dedicated to driving innovation in clean energy solutions. The Large-Scale Pilot will find its home at PPL's subsidiary, Louisville Gas and Electric, utilizing technology pioneered by the University of Kentucky. The selection of Koch Modular as a partner underscores its reputation for excellence and extensive experience in the development of CO2 capture technology.

PPL has solidified its position as a trailblazer in the energy sector, boasting a portfolio of over 150 research and development projects involving more than 30 industry and academic partners. This commitment to innovation aligns seamlessly with the goals of the CO2 capture project, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between industry leaders, research institutions, and technology developers in propelling the clean energy agenda forward.

As the project progresses, all eyes will be on Cane Run, Kentucky, where the 20-megawatt research system will take shape, capturing CO2 and paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient energy future. The collaboration between Koch Modular Process Systems, PPL Corp., and other key stakeholders stands as a testament to the power of partnerships in driving innovation and bringing transformative technologies from the lab to the commercial landscape.
