The government of Kerala has recently received proposals from two major companies for the establishment of green hydrogen and green ammonia production plants. These proposals aim to facilitate the production and utilization of environmentally friendly fuels within the state.

One of the companies has put forth a plan to export one lakh tonnes of green ammonia to Germany from the Vizhinjam Adani port. This proposal highlights the potential for Kerala to become an exporter of sustainable energy resources. Additionally, the company intends to develop an integrated renewable energy project that combines solar installations with a pumped hydro storage facility. This innovative project aims to provide flexibility in meeting the peak hour energy requirements of state power utilities. The pumped-storage power plant will be financed by the Kerala State Electricity Board in accordance with the state's renewable energy policy.

The receipt of these proposals underscores Kerala's commitment to embracing green technologies and achieving a sustainable future. By exploring avenues such as green hydrogen and green ammonia production, the government aims to promote clean energy solutions and reduce carbon emissions in the region.

Kerala has received significant proposals amounting to Rs 30,000 crore for the establishment of green ammonia production facilities. One of the proposed facilities aims to produce 200,000 tonnes per annum of green ammonia and will be powered by a 1,200 MW solar capacity integrated with a closed loop pumped hydro storage plant of 1,500 MW/12,000 MWh capacity. The estimated investment for this project is Rs 22,061 crore.

In addition, another company has expressed interest in setting up a 252 MW electrolyser plant alongside a green hydrogen and ammonia generation plant. The proposed plant will be developed in phases with a capital expenditure investment of Rs 8,763 crore. The produced green hydrogen and ammonia will be made available to local consumers, government entities, refineries, and fertilizer industries either at market rates or for export.

The initial phase of this project entails the installation of a 2 MW electrolyser and a five-tonnes-per-day ammonia production plant. The estimated expense for this phase is Rs 800 million, with a total cost of Rs 1,150 million. Upon completion, the facility will be capable of producing 36 kg per hour of green hydrogen and 288 kg per hour of ammonia.

Earlier this year, the Kerala state government released a draft plan for promoting green hydrogen and also unveiled a Rs 200-crore scheme to establish green hydrogen hubs in Kochi and Trivandrum.
