Kemira has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Norit’s UK reactivation business from Purton Carbons Limited, effective June 28, 2024. This strategic move marks Kemira's inaugural foray into the activated carbon market, specifically targeting the removal of micropollutants.

Activated carbon stands as the predominant technology for eliminating taste, odor, and micropollutants such as Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) from drinking water, underscoring its critical role in water treatment applications. The increasing focus on consumer health and environmental safety has amplified the relevance of micropollutant removal in both water and wastewater treatment plants, further bolstered by recent regulatory updates in the EU.

As part of the acquisition agreement, Kemira will assume ownership of the Purton, UK reactivation facility, renowned for its expertise in rejuvenating granular and pelletized activated carbons to extend their operational lifespan. This facility's capabilities include specialized processes such as Green reactivation, catering to critical applications in potable water and food industries, and Amber reactivation, tailored for diverse non-food sectors. Expected to finalize by Q3 2024, this transaction encompasses a plant that achieved significant multimillion-euro revenues in 2023, highlighting its robust operational footprint. Additionally, nine skilled employees are poised to join Kemira, facilitating a seamless integration and ensuring continuity of expertise.

Tuija Pohjolainen-Hiltunen, President of Industry & Water at Kemira, emphasized the growing significance of PFAS and micropollutant removal in water treatment, driven by stringent regulatory requirements and heightened concerns over consumer and environmental health. She highlighted that the acquisition of Norit’s UK carbon reactivation business is pivotal for Kemira, enhancing their portfolio and bolstering capabilities in water treatment solutions. This strategic move positions Kemira to effectively meet escalating demand across Europe for advanced water treatment technologies. By expanding their expertise in activated carbon reactivation, Kemira aims to provide comprehensive solutions that not only comply with evolving regulations but also address critical environmental and health challenges faced by their customers.

Kemira stands at the forefront of the global market, recognized for its leadership in delivering sustainable chemical solutions essential for industries heavily reliant on water.
