Hindalco Industries Limited, recognized as a global leader in the production of aluminum and copper and a flagship company under the Aditya Birla Group, has entered into a significant contract with Metso. This contract involves the delivery of a state-of-the-art, integrated electronic waste recycling system, which will be established in close proximity to Hindalco's Birla copper facility located in Pakhajan, Gujarat, India. This collaboration signifies a strategic move by Hindalco to enhance its sustainability efforts and leverage advanced recycling technologies, reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation in the metals industry.

The forthcoming greenfield facility is set to be a groundbreaking project, marking the first of its kind in India. It is designed to produce 50,000 tonnes of low-carbon copper annually, aligning with global trends towards reducing carbon footprints and promoting sustainable production practices. While the financial details of the order remain confidential, the bulk of the transaction has been accounted for in Metso's Minerals segment's orders received for the second quarter of 2024. This initiative not only highlights Hindalco's dedication to environmental sustainability but also positions India as a pioneer in advanced electronic waste recycling technologies.

Metso's scope of delivery for this project is extensive and includes three Kaldo furnaces, an anode furnace, an anode casting shop, gas cleaning systems, and other supporting equipment. Additionally, Metso will provide the basic engineering required for the plant's development. This comprehensive package ensures that the facility will be equipped with cutting-edge technology and infrastructure necessary for efficient and environmentally friendly operations. The project's completion and commissioning are anticipated within a two-year timeframe, setting an ambitious yet achievable timeline for this transformative initiative.

Jyrki Makkonen, Vice President of Smelting at Metso, expressed both excitement and honor at being entrusted with the significant order from Hindalco. He emphasized Hindalco's prestigious position as the world's second-largest copper rod producer and India's largest copper manufacturer, underscoring the importance of the partnership. Makkonen highlighted that Metso's delivery includes the Planet Positive process, which is renowned for its energy efficiency and high metal recovery rates. He pointed out that the process is designed to adhere to stringent emission controls, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Additionally, the system's zero liquid discharge capability reflects Metso's commitment to sustainable practices. Makkonen expressed confidence that the new facility will set a benchmark in electronic waste recycling, contributing to a greener future. He reiterated Metso's dedication to supporting Hindalco's growth and environmental goals, viewing this collaboration as a significant step forward in advancing sustainable metal production technologies.
