Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), in a joint venture with Tata Projects Ltd (TPL), has been awarded a significant contract worth Rs 2,191 crore (approximately $252 million) by Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MPMRCL) for the construction of the pivotal underground segment of the Indore Metro Phase 1 project. This contract, designated as Package IN-05R, marks a major milestone in the development of Indore’s urban transportation infrastructure.
The project entails the construction of an 8.65-kilometer underground metro corridor, encompassing tunnels and stations. Notably, this segment represents the sole underground component of the broader 31.32-kilometer Indore Metro Phase 1 project. The scope of work is extensive, requiring the construction of 11.32 kilometers of tunnels utilizing state-of-the-art Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). Additionally, the joint venture will be responsible for developing seven underground stations, crucial hubs for commuters, at key locations throughout the city.
These stations include Indore Railway Station, Rajwada, Chota Ganpati, Bada Ganpati, Ramchandra Nagar, BSF/Kalani Nagar, and Airport. The underground corridor will effectively connect a ramp east of Indore Railway Station to a ramp west of Airport Station, facilitating seamless connectivity.
HCC holds a 55% stake in the joint venture, while Tata Projects manages the remaining share. This partnership brings together the expertise and resources necessary to successfully execute this complex undertaking. The contract award underscores the companies' recognized ability to preform complex and large scale construction projects.
HCC’s extensive track record in metro construction across India further reinforces its capabilities. The company is currently engaged in significant projects such as the Mumbai Metro Line III, where it is constructing 4 kilometers of twin tunnels and four stations, and two packages for the Chennai Metro, contributing to the city’s expanding metro network.
The Indore Metro Phase 1 project, with its 31.32-kilometer network, is poised to revolutionize urban mobility in the city. By introducing a modern, efficient transport solution, the project aims to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce travel times, and enhance the overall quality of life for Indore’s growing population. The addition of the underground corridor will ensure seamless transit in densely populated areas, making metro travel more convenient for residents and visitors alike.
The awarded contract is expected to significantly bolster HCC's order book, providing a substantial revenue stream for the company over the coming years. This is particularly important considering that HCC reported a consolidated net loss in the latest quarter. Successful execution of this major project will also enhance the company’s reputation as a leader in metro rail construction.
