Abu Dhabi: UAE and Japanese businesses team up to consider establishing the first commercial-scale e-Polypropylene plant in Abu Dhabi. Masdar, the pioneering clean energy company in the United Arab Emirates, is leading the way in Abu Dhabi's future of sustainable energy, Mitsubishi Chemical Group Corporation (MCG), and INPEX CORPORATION have come to terms on the possibility of producing the first Polypropylene on a commercial scale ever in Abu Dhabi using CO2 and green Hydrogen. Green Hydrogen will be combined with CO2 to create e-Methanol, which will then be used to create propylene and Polypropylene.

HH Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, and Japan's Prime Minister, HE Fumio Kishida, made the announcement at the Japan-UAE Business Forum in Abu Dhabi.  The three businesses will investigate whether a commercial-scale green Hydrogen to e-Methanol and Polypropylene project is technologically and economically feasible.

Cooperating with Mitsubishi Chemical Group and INPEX, two leading Japanese firms, said Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar. Organizations firmly believe in the ability of innovation to usher in a brighter future.  With the agreement reached today, working together to further explore how green Hydrogen can spur economic development and environmental protection.

According to Jean-Marc Gilson, CEO of Mitsubishi Chemical Group, the chemical industry is currently confronted with the simultaneous task of decreasing its greenhouse gas emissions and taking an active role in driving the shift towards a carbon-neutral economy. With that in mind, are excited to leverage experience to help this initiative succeed and see desire to use CO2 as a crucial beginning raw material as a very significant step towards a sustainable future.

Takayuki Ueda, President & CEO of INPEX, announced the collaboration between MASDAR, MCG, and INPEX to establish a sustainable supply chain connecting the UAE and Japan for green Hydrogen to e-Methanol and Polypropylene production. The decarbonization initiatives are making and long-term commitment to Abu Dhabi, one of major business areas, are both perfectly in line with this objective. Intend to take advantage of this chance to improve clean energy solutions and contribute to the realization of a net-zero society by 2050.

Everyday products like bottles, jars, and food packaging are made of the plastic substance Polypropylene.  By developing this project, Masdar, MCG, and INPEX hope to assist hard-to-abate sectors like the maritime sector and industries in reducing their carbon footprints. E-Methanol, which will also be produced by the project, is a crucial synthetic fuel that can be used to decarbonize maritime transportation.
