In response to the rising demand for sustainable industrial solutions with minimal environmental impact, Hydnum Steel, the first green steel plant on the Iberian Peninsula, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Knauf Interfer, a prominent European steel processing and distribution company. This partnership is designed to expand the availability of emission-free green steel across Europe and reinforce the commitment to sustainability within the steel industry.

Through this collaboration, Hydnum Steel will supply Knauf Interfer with green steel worth approximately €80 million annually. The two companies will work together to create a more efficient and environmentally conscious value chain. A key element of the agreement is the development of a green steel supply network, leveraging Knauf Interfer’s advanced production and supply chain management platform. This system will revolve around a trimodal hub located in Duisburg, Germany, a prime inner port location. The Duisburg hub will enable optimized logistics, ensuring efficient and sustainable deliveries to customers in Central Europe.

The partnership also aims to expand into steel product processing, where Knauf Interfer will provide additional services, such as cutting, segmentation, and re-coiling, tailored to the specific needs of Hydnum Steel’s customers. A notable feature of the collaboration is the transparency regarding the CO2 footprint of the steel, which will be communicated to customers using Knauf Interfer’s straightforward Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)-based approach.

In line with their shared commitment to sustainability, Hydnum Steel and Knauf Interfer also plan to establish a circular economy system for recycling ferrous scrap. This innovative initiative will allow scrap metal produced within Knauf Interfer’s network to be recycled at Hydnum Steel’s Puertollano plant. This approach will close the production loop and foster a complete circular economy, further enhancing the sustainability of their operations.

By combining forces, Hydnum Steel and Knauf Interfer aim to significantly reduce carbon emissions in the steel industry and lead the transition towards a more sustainable future. Their partnership represents a major step forward in green steel distribution and the implementation of environmentally responsible industrial practices across Europe.

Knauf Interfer, based in Duisburg, is a leading independent service provider, processor, and distributor for steel and aluminum mills across Europe. With extensive experience, the company has built a robust international network of suppliers, offering a diverse range of products, including both standard and specialized steel and aluminum grades and dimensions. Its decentralized structure allows for quick decision-making and efficient service delivery, all backed by advanced technologies and a highly skilled workforce.
