GEFO, a Germany-based family-owned shipping company, is set to make a substantial investment in the maritime sector by committing a 'three-digit million amount' towards the construction of ten new 3,850 deadweight tonnage (dwt) tankers. This strategic move includes partnering with the Xiangyu shipyard in Nantong, China, where the vessels are slated for construction with planned delivery schedules falling between 2026 and 2028.

The distinctive feature of these specialized tankers lies in their stainless steel tanks specifically designed for transporting chemical cargoes. GEFO's decision to incorporate stainless steel tanks showcases a commitment to ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of chemical goods, emphasizing the importance of materials that meet stringent requirements for chemical handling.

These new additions to GEFO's fleet are not merely replacements but represent a step forward in optimizing vessel efficiency. In comparison to the company's previous series, these vessels have undergone further enhancements to reduce fuel consumption and correspondingly lower emissions. The design incorporates features that facilitate future environmental optimizations and enable the utilization of innovative fuels. GEFO's proactive approach aligns with the broader industry trend of embracing sustainable practices and exploring alternative fuels for maritime operations.

The strategic decision to invest in these ten new tankers is driven by the need to expand GEFO's fleet and address the aging of some existing vessels. With most chemical shippers adhering to a maximum vessel age of 20 years between 2028 and 2030, the newbuilds are positioned to serve as replacements and upgrades to ensure compliance with industry standards. GEFO's extensive fleet, totalling 150 tankers, encompasses various types, including chemical, gas, and mineral oil tankers. These vessels operate on the Rhine and within the ARA (Antwerp/Rotterdam/Amsterdam) chemical triangle, contributing to the efficient transportation of goods in these key regions.

The timing of this order coincides with the finalization of GEFO's ongoing €400 million investment program, which is geared towards acquiring a fleet of eco-friendly specialized tankers. This comprehensive program, set to conclude with the delivery of the last newbuilding in the summer of 2024, includes a total of 26 newbuilds and 13 purchases of modern tonnage. The commitment to sustainable and environmentally conscious shipping is evident throughout this program, reflecting GEFO's dedication to staying at the forefront of industry standards and embracing innovations that contribute to a greener maritime future.

GEFO's significant investment in ten new stainless steel chemical tankers underscores the company's commitment to modernizing its fleet and embracing sustainable practices in maritime transportation. The optimization of these vessels for fuel efficiency and emissions reduction aligns with the broader industry push towards eco-friendly shipping solutions. As GEFO continues to expand and upgrade its fleet, the company not only ensures compliance with evolving industry standards but also plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of environmentally responsible maritime operations.
