Freepoint Eco-Systems LLC has successfully completed the first shipment of pyrolysis oil, or PyOil, produced at its new advanced recycling facility in Hebron, Ohio. The PyOil, derived from waste plastic, was transported by rail to Shell USA’s refining facility in Norco, Louisiana.

The Hebron site, which is ISCC Plus certified, marks a major milestone in Freepoint’s efforts to convert plastic waste into valuable resources. Capable of processing 180 million pounds of waste plastic annually, the facility uses state-of-the-art technology to produce PyOil, which can be used as a feedstock for manufacturing new plastic products. Construction of the plant began in late 2022, and the site is now in the final stages of commissioning.

“This first shipment represents an exciting step for us,” said Jeff McMahon, managing director at Freepoint. “We’re proud to introduce product from our Hebron facility into the market and support the upcycling of plastic waste into a useful commodity. Transporting PyOil by rail in significant volumes not only meets industrial demand but also improves the environmental impact of the supply chain by replacing feedstocks typically made from crude oil.”

McMahon emphasized the broader environmental impact of the company’s mission. “Turning plastic waste, which might otherwise end up in landfills or be incinerated, into new products at commercial scale is a critical move toward addressing the global plastic waste challenge,” he said.

Shell USA, the recipient of the initial PyOil delivery, sees the partnership as a testament to the commercial viability of advanced recycling.

“Facilities like Freepoint’s prove that advanced recycling can work at scale,” said Laura Chamorro, general manager, commercial, at Shell Polymers. “This success is key to expanding the availability of recycled materials and meeting the increasing demand for Shell’s certified circular products.”

Freepoint Eco-Systems is part of Freepoint Commodities LLC, a company focused on providing sustainable solutions through commodity marketing and logistics. The Hebron facility reflects Freepoint’s growing commitment to circular economy initiatives and environmental innovation.

As the demand for recycled and sustainable materials continues to grow, Freepoint’s efforts demonstrate that large-scale solutions are both possible and impactful. The company's approach aims to reduce plastic waste while supporting industries transitioning toward more sustainable operations.

With this first delivery completed, Freepoint plans to scale its production and distribution, working with partners across the value chain to make a lasting environmental and economic difference.

Pyrolysis oil, produced through the thermochemical breakdown of organic materials such as waste tires, serves as a viable feedstock for manufacturing carbon black.
