Fortescue initiated a significant milestone in the advancement of the company's $550 million project in green hydrogen production in the United States on May 3rd, 2024. This event marks the inauguration of Fortescue's first planned green energy investment in North America, commemorated with a groundbreaking ceremony and the renaming of our hydrogen facility in Buckeye, Arizona, to Arizona Hydrogen.

During the event held at the 158-acre facility site, Dr. Andrew Forrest AO, Fortescue's Executive Chair and Founder, commended the Biden Administration's dedication to the energy transition, while also emphasizing that there is still more progress to achieve.

Dr. Forrest stated, "The United States has made significant advancements in attracting international investment in green hydrogen and decarbonization initiatives, such as Fortescue's solar and wind-driven Arizona Hydrogen facility. Fortescue proudly takes the lead in this area, recognizing the urgent need for swift action on a global scale."

Throughout its operational phase, Arizona Hydrogen anticipates employing 40 individuals directly at the facility, contributing to a potential total of 431 jobs, encompassing both direct, indirect, and induced positions, which could yield $29.3 million in wages. Additionally, Arizona Hydrogen has the potential to bolster Arizona's GDP by $59.2 million and generate $9.1 million in income and sales taxes for state and local governments annually.

Arizona Hydrogen is scheduled to manufacture up to 11,000 tons of liquid green hydrogen each year and is strategically situated to play a substantial role in decarbonizing the heavy-duty on-road transportation industry. With the southwest market consuming around 5 billion gallons of diesel annually for heavy-duty transport, Arizona Hydrogen is poised to play a crucial role in emissions reduction within the mobility sector.

Stephen Roe Lewis, Governor of the Gila River Indian Community, expressed, "By acknowledging and respecting the ancestral lands of the Akimel O'otham and Pee Posh people, we acknowledge our deep connection and collective duty as guardians of the environment. Companies such as Fortescue are instrumental in leading the path towards a future that is both sustainable and equitable for future generations."

"Buckeye is delighted to extend a warm welcome to Arizona Hydrogen to the Sustainable Valley," expressed Mayor Eric Orsborn.

"Fortescue's investment in our community contributes to the ongoing growth and sustainability of Buckeye, as well as the entire state of Arizona, ensuring prosperity for generations to come," remarked Mayor Eric Orsborn.

"Today marks a significant milestone for the advancement of Arizona's clean energy economy," stated Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority.

"Arizona Hydrogen enhances Arizona's role as a leading advocate for sustainability on a national scale, pioneering clean energy technologies and innovation. We extend our gratitude to Dr. Forrest and the entire Fortescue team for their dedication to Arizona, and we eagerly anticipate assisting Fortescue in achieving long-term prosperity in Buckeye.”
