Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM) has made a significant advancement in carbon capture and storage (CCS) by securing the largest offshore CO2 storage lease in the United States, partnering with the Texas General Land Office (GLO) to acquire over 271,000 acres. Dan Ammann, president of ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions, underscored the importance of this lease, stating, “This is yet another sign of our commitment to CCS and the strides we’ve been able to make.” He highlighted that with an expanding customer base ready to implement CCS solutions, ExxonMobil is in a prime position to facilitate significant emissions reductions along the Gulf Coast. The lease agreement is expected to have direct benefits for the Texas Permanent School Fund, which plays a vital role in funding education for Texas children. Commissioner Buckingham, who manages 13 million acres of energy-rich state land, expressed pride in collaborating with ExxonMobil to use state land for innovative solutions that can help ensure future energy production. Buckingham also emphasized the significance of using revenue from this project to support education, stating, “As a mom, I have long said that educating our children is the most important thing we do, and I am thrilled that the revenue from this lease will go toward benefiting our great state along with our Texas school children.” This dual focus on education and emissions reduction highlights the multifaceted benefits of the initiative.
