A Monday morning explosion at a Seymour Paints manufacturing plant resulted in injuries to three workers and prompted a response from local fire and police departments. The incident occurred around 8:34 a.m. at the facility located at 917 Crosby Ave, Sycamore, Illinois USA.
Initial reports indicated two individuals were seriously injured, but later updates confirmed a total of three workers were affected by the explosion. Two of the injured were transported to a local hospital and are currently listed in stable condition. The extent of the third worker's injuries was not immediately clear.
Sycamore Police Chief Jim Winters confirmed the incident and stated that the Sycamore Fire Department was actively working to extinguish the fire. Authorities confirmed that the fire was “generally contained” and that there was no threat to the surrounding community.
Sycamore Fire Chief Bart Gilmore provided further details about the scene and the response efforts. “Report of flames and foam being discharged over the affected area of the building,” Gilmore stated. “The report was that there was a paint can that exploded. We don't know if it was dropped or if it was part of another system that they had going.
“Initial crews came in, met some fire. The foam suppression system was not meeting the need. The sprinkler system needed to be assisted by fire engines.” He credited the company’s existing fire suppression systems and the rapid response of emergency services with preventing a more significant disaster. “The potential was very bad, luckily they had an excellent suppression system,” Gilmore said. “Luckily, we had a fast response time and the fire was able to be suppressed before any real significant damage and this became a much larger incident.”
The Seymour company specializes in the manufacturing of spray paint, a process that involves aerosol products. This manufacturing plant is functional in the city since 75 years.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Fire officials are working to determine the precise sequence of events that led to the incident, including whether the exploding paint can was dropped or if it was related to a manufacturing system malfunction.
Sycamore, a city located roughly 60 miles west of Chicago, is home to the Seymour of Sycamore Inc. plant. The company is a significant local employer, and the incident has drawn attention from the surrounding community.
Authorities have reassured residents that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The focus remains on the ongoing investigation into the cause of the explosion and ensuring the well-being of the injured workers.
