Piedmont Lithium, a key North American supplier of lithium essential for the U.S. electric vehicle industry, has announced that Ghana’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued an environmental permit for the Ewoyaa Lithium Project. The Ewoyaa Project, a collaboration with Atlantic Lithium Limited, marks a significant step forward in the development of this crucial lithium initiative.
In August 2023, Piedmont Lithium revealed it had opted to acquire a 22.5% stake in the Ewoyaa Project, pending government approvals. This acquisition is part of a staged investment plan that aims to increase Piedmont’s equity interest to 50% in Atlantic Lithium’s Ghanaian lithium portfolio.
Patrick Brindle, Chief Operating Officer of Piedmont Lithium, highlighted the significance of receiving the EPA Permit. He stated, “Receiving the EPA Permit is a major milestone for the Ewoyaa Project. Atlantic Lithium has demonstrated a strong commitment to the responsible development of this project. We are grateful to the EPA and Atlantic Lithium for reaching this important achievement. We eagerly anticipate the ratification of the mining lease and the subsequent construction of the project, subject to final approvals and market conditions.”
The permit from Ghana’s EPA is a crucial development, setting the stage for the project's progression. The next steps include securing the mining lease and completing other necessary approvals before construction can commence.
