The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of United States recently released Safer Chemical Ingredients List (SCIL). The list is a living document and presently contains 36 chemicals that are the safest chemicals for their use.

The listed chemicals are safe in handling as well as consumption. The SCIL is expected to benefit several stakeholders including product manufacturers that use SCIL to develop high performing products that contain safer ingredients, chemical manufacturers who would use the SCIL to promote the safer products they are manufacturing, retailers that use the SCIL to maintain sustainability, and at last environment and health workers who use SCIL in support of their work to encourage the usage of safe chemicals as far as possible.

The list is a part of EPA’s Safer Choice Program that certifies products containing the ingredients which are safe is all aspects and met the program’s human health and environmental safety criteria. The SCIL can be used by companies as Safer Choice Label on the products that meet the standards of Safer Choice Program.

A list of Safer-Choice certified products has been put on the EPA’s website. EPA has also stated that it has hopes for an expansion of the Safer Choice Program so that it can make products containing safer chemicals as ingredients available to various communities including the low-income groups.
