Emirates Biotech has officially appointed SAMSUNG Engineering & Architecture (SAMSUNG E&A) as the main contractor for its ambitious Polylactic Acid (PLA) production facility in the United Arab Emirates. This landmark project, named the Falcon PLA Project, is set to position Emirates Biotech at the forefront of sustainable innovation by delivering a large-scale plant dedicated to the production of biodegradable plastics.
Chosen for its proven ability to handle large, complex industrial developments, SAMSUNG E&A will lead the full scope of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) activities for the facility. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing environmentally responsible solutions and marks a significant milestone in the region’s green manufacturing ambitions.
The pre-EPC agreement was signed on April 14, 2025, at Emirates Biotech’s headquarters in the UAE, kicking off the first phase of this strategic collaboration. The plant will be situated in the KEZAD free zone in Abu Dhabi, taking advantage of its modern infrastructure and proximity to the Khalifa deep-sea port, ensuring streamlined logistics and export capabilities.
Earlier, Emirates Biotech also announced its selection of Sulzer as the technology provider for the project. SAMSUNG E&A will play a pivotal role in seamlessly integrating Sulzer’s advanced technology and proprietary equipment into the overall plant design, ensuring optimized production performance.
The Falcon PLA Plant is projected to become operational in early 2028 and will be a critical driver in replacing fossil-based plastics with renewable, biodegradable alternatives. The initiative aligns with Emirates Biotech’s broader mission to support the transition to a circular economy by offering high-performance, eco-conscious materials to industries worldwide.
Marc Verbruggen, CEO of Emirates Biotech, stated: "Partnering with SAMSUNG E&A is a key milestone in realizing our sustainable vision. Their expertise guarantees the smooth execution of our project, and we’re thrilled to bring the Falcon PLA Project to life with such a capable partner."
Echoing the excitement, Hong Namkoong, President and CEO of SAMSUNG E&A, said: "We are honored to lead this transformative project. It represents a strategic expansion into the eco-friendly plastics sector and a strong foundation for future collaboration with Emirates Biotech."
Through this collaboration, Emirates Biotech reinforces its commitment to innovation and sustainability, laying the groundwork for a cleaner, greener industrial future.
