Today, Dow (NYSE: DOW) revealed the commencement of its propylene glycol (PG) capacity expansion at its integrated manufacturing facility in Map Ta Phut, Rayong, Thailand. This strategic and cost-efficient investment, characterized by low capital intensity and high returns, enhances propylene glycol capacity by 80,000 tons per year. Consequently, the total output reaches 250,000 tons annually, positioning the Dow Map Ta Phut PG manufacturing facility as the largest of its kind in the Asia Pacific region.
At the Map Ta Phut site, back-integration offers a cost-effective source of essential upstream propylene glycol (PG) raw materials, including propylene oxide (PO). This strategy secures a dependable supply position, facilitating growth in downstream high-value PG markets.
Jane Palmieri, President of Industrial Intermediates & Infrastructure, expressed, "In a region known for its rapid growth and dynamism, this capacity expansion reinforces our ability to innovate and manufacture for customers across Asia Pacific and beyond. The expansion at our Map Ta Phut site not only maximizes our current asset infrastructure but also elevates our standing as a regional and global leader in the industry, enabling us to provide enhanced service to our customers."
Dow's prominent propylene glycol franchise transforms fundamental chemical building blocks into premium ingredients for cosmetics, food, pharmaceuticals, and various everyday products. The company is at the forefront of sustainable PG production, utilizing lower-carbon energy sources and integrating the use of bio-circular and circular feedstocks through the mass balance approach, certified under ISCC PLUS, across its PG manufacturing facilities globally. Dow has already introduced new PG solutions with externally validated sustainability advantages in North America, Europe, and Latin America. The company aims to attain ISCC PLUS certification for the Map Ta Phut PG facility by the conclusion of 2024.
Within the pharmaceutical sector, Propylene Glycol USP/EP is frequently employed as a solvent for active ingredients in oral and topical preparations, though it is not endorsed for utilization as an ingredient in injectable applications. In cosmetics and personal care merchandise, it functions as a solvent, coupling agent, carrier, emulsion stabilizer, softening agent, viscosity adjuster, and humectant.
Dow (NYSE: DOW) stands as a premier materials science corporation, catering to clients across thriving sectors including packaging, infrastructure, mobility, and consumer goods. Leveraging its worldwide presence, integrated assets, extensive innovation, market leadership, and dedication to sustainability, Dow drives profitable expansion and contributes to a sustainable tomorrow. With manufacturing facilities spanning 31 nations and a workforce of around 35,900 individuals, Dow achieved sales of roughly $45 billion in 2023.
