Croatian PET recycling company, Rekis, a result of a merger between the Austrian drinks firm Steinrieser and the Austro-Croatian trading company KIS pica involved in beverage production, has recently made a significant undisclosed investment in the establishment of a state-of-the-art PET recycling plant located in the Donja Dubrava region of Croatia. This advanced facility is capable of producing an impressive 18,000 tons per year of high-quality rPET (recycled PET) pellets derived from post-consumer plastic bottles.

The collection of plastic bottles within Croatia is efficiently managed through an existing deposit system and municipal collection points. However, Rekis's operations go beyond national borders, as the company also sources collected plastic bottles from neighboring countries, including Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.

Rekis has adopted an innovative approach to the recycling process by utilizing Sesotec's cutting-edge multi-sensor sorting systems. These systems play a crucial role in the separation of plastic bottles and, in a subsequent step, plastic flakes according to their type and quality. Sesotec's Varisort technology is employed to meticulously scrutinize waste bottles, ensuring the removal of undesirable materials from the material stream, thereby guaranteeing the essential grade purity.

Filip Hozjan, the plant manager at Rekis, emphasized the critical role of Sesotec's multi-sensor sorting systems within the facility, describing them as the heart of the operation. He stated, "Only reliable and, above all, precise sorting enables us to obtain high-quality, color and grade-pure rPET that can be further processed into food-grade rPET pellets. These high-purity flakes serve as the primary material for beverage producers in the creation of new bottles."

The creation of Rekis's PET recycling plant signifies a notable advancement in the sustainable management of plastic waste in the region. With a robust commitment to quality, precision, and environmental responsibility, Rekis has established itself as a key player in the recycling industry. The investment in this cutting-edge facility is not only a testament to the company's dedication to sustainability but also a vital step toward reducing plastic waste and promoting the circular economy. By producing high-quality rPET pellets from post-consumer plastic bottles, Rekis is contributing to the reduction of plastic pollution and the conservation of valuable resources.

This venture also underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing environmental challenges. Rekis's practice of sourcing plastic bottles from neighboring countries demonstrates a broader commitment to sustainable practices and the recognition that environmental issues transcend national boundaries.

The integration of Sesotec's advanced sorting systems into the recycling process is a testament to the significance of innovative technology in the field of recycling. Precise and efficient sorting not only ensures high-quality output but also aids in the responsible disposal of materials that would otherwise be detrimental to the environment.
